time to buy photo paper and I am getting very confused. what brand and kind do you all use when you want the best and what do you use for everyday? what type do you use for photo contests? Depending on what you all say, I will pick my paper. btw, I print mostly 13 X 19 size; landscapes and animals and my printer is a canon pro 100. thanks

I also print with a Canon and I've been using Staples High Gloss for a long time with excellent luck. My largest is
8x10 however and I don't know if Staples sells large paper.

I have a Canon Pixma PRO9000 MK II; I think it is pretty much the same as your Pro 100, except that it doesn't have the copy and scan functions that I think you do.

Mostly I print 8x10's with a few 11 x 14's for home display and the latter always for contests or shows. For Paper I mostly use Red River 8 1/2 x 11 & 11x 14 & 17 mostly in one of the gloss 66# offerings; although I did buy some 11x 14 Arctic Polar Satin for one of the kid's weddings and didn't really like it, but maybe it was the wrong paper for the job.

I also have some Canon 4x6 glossy--cheap stuff that I use for testing and experiments; when it's gone that will be changed to RR too.

Here where I am the only local place to get printing papers is Staples and their stock is mostly HP or Staples' brand with no ICC profiles available so I have to be really desperate to get paper there. Cosco and Sam's both involve 100+ mile round trips and tolls. I have been quite happy with the RR products, and as long as I buy more that a box at a time, the total cost is reasonable, even with the shipping, and I avoid the sales tax. :thumbup:

I also use a Canon Pro-100. For colour I prefer Canon Paper Plus Semi-Gloss. The best I've found for black-and-white prints is Canon Luster. I also use only Canon ink. In your case, since you are unsure, I would suggest buying small quantities of several different brands and types, and compare. It's really a matter of personal preference. You will know immediately when you hit the right one!

jmcgloth, There is no problem in using different brand paper than your printer so long as you have (or can get) the correct ICC color profile needed for your printer to handle the paper--Red River provides them for download for free--and you have to tell your printer software to use whatever profile is correct and not it own profiles.

Red River is my source. Great selection of different types of paper, good prices and excellent customer service. For your contests or sales, try the San Gabriel paper. It is outstanding and has the surface texture closest to photographic fiber paper that I have yet to find. For give aways, I use Canon paper in my Canon printer.

Not sure whether you mean 'best' or 'good enough'. The best paper is archival. That means it won't yellow with time. Archival quality paper has no brightners or acid. If it is not advertised as 'archival', it probably isn't.

Canson papers are very good, are archival quality, and used by friends for exhibitions, also Epson signature series paper, MOAB and Hahnemule Fine Art. I also use Inkpress papers for more everyday images. ICC profiles are available online for all these papers.

I use Luster, Matte and Metal paper to print on. I don't use Gloss paper. I have an Epson Stylus Photo R3000 printer so I use Red River or Epson papers. I print up to 12X18 prints. Larger ones are done by Adoramapix or Easy Prints.
The higher quality printer you use the better quality photos you will get no matter what paper you use.

For your printer - PP201 and Canon branded ink .... for best and for everyday. Very good combination.

There is a better paper that is 308gsm the Canon PT101 Platinum, but I found it too thick for my Canon printer even though it is meant to be rated for it. The roller marks came out on the prints. It might be worth buying one pack and trying it out.
