I seem to get the background focused more than my object?
Any pointers?

What camera and settings are you using? Without knowing that, it would be hard to say where to start as it could be something simple or harder.

If your camera supports it, use a spot focus instead of focusing on multiple points. That way, the camera will auto focus on what you are pointing at.

I agree, get rid of the multiple focal points. It looks to me like the barrel is what focus locked on. my tip would be use single focal point and focus on rider. (face if possible) Shoot shoot shoot :)

Camera appears to have focused as told to: brightest part of the image and the nearest. I agree with the others: spot focus.
