I have my distant sights set on a Nikon 105mm f/2.8 Micro. The newest version has AF and VR and is somewhat pricey. They also made one of these in the 1990's, without AF and VR.

So, my question: What is you opinion of this lens, old or new? The older one is available at a much lower price, of course. I would be using it on a modern Nikon DSLR - D5000, D7000, D70s.

I think it's the "standard" micro-Nikkor. It's on my list to eventually replace my old AI-S 105mm f/4.

I got the AF Micro Nikkor 105mm 1:2.8 D from a fellow UHH member. Huge learning curve without autofocus but pictures are fantastic.

I'm still learning with it.

Nice shots. Stacking would give a nice result.

I have the 105mm and I'm really happy with it. It's a great micro and also a great telephoto.

Awesome lens! I have this lense and wouldn't give it up. Heavy construction, sharp and produced wonderful photos. Here are a couple of example shots my first few attempts. Yes there is a learning curve and for macro you are better of using manual focus. Both shots were handheld.

Jerry, look for the "D" version, probably the best and most plentiful version.

Does the "D" signify anything in particular?

I had both and sold the D kept the G. On my D700 the G is Cleaner, fewer artifacts, less chromatic aberration, and the VR helps me a lot when hand holding and in macro or portrait.
I shot my neighbor's portrait and she threatened to sue me if I let anybody see all those wrinkles. LOL - be forewarned - it is incredibly sharp.

IMHO if you plan on shooting without a tripod I'd insist on VR if everything you plan to shoot will allow you to stabilize then the non VR will be fine.

Nikkor AF 105mm F2.8 Micro D (the D indicates Distance info transmission)
Its not the newest with VR, but its a bit better glass than the manual AiS version and it has very high quality glass. They can be bought for $350 to $450 in nice shape, used.
I found Ken Rockwells review on this one:
