Here's a shot I took this morning. Canon T6S, Canon 24-70L Lens. I like this alot better, taken about 1015. I cropped the photo.

Thanks for all your help.

You were a lot closer to this ship than the boats of the other day. I wonder if the dehaze tool in Lightroom CC would clean the haze up?

Looks to me the "softness" in this image is most likely due to a rather large amount of haze, that any lens would show with softness. A COP will cut through some of it, so it's a good habit to use one in situations like this. But there is also some "softness" due to heat and that, no filter can cure.

It's because of the lighting conditions and the atmospherics that your image doesn't look good. Taking pictures of ship on the ocean is like taking pictures of landscapes. Lighting is very important.

One day I was taking pictures of Peregrine falcons with my 500mm f/4 Canon lens. I was using a tripod with gimbal head. I was shooting from the top of a cliff in Palos Verdes CA at a place called Point Fermin. There was a fishing vessel that had some neat colors and rigging that I thought I'd take some pictures of. So I snapped some pictures of it and focused on the ships name painted on the stern of the ship. I got a few sharp pictures one minute and then after a few shots I couldn't get an in-focus shot to save my life. An hour later when the lighting conditions changed, I was able to get a good focus on the name again. It's all because of the lighting conditions and atmospherics.

There is no possible help to be given for several reasons. The list of them being you post a thumbnail as an original...

The second one, use photo analysis next time?

Mike, what if any software are you using. You might want to post some of these Haze filled photos at:

Someone that has the CC might be able to eliminate that haze or reduce it.
One of the pit falls of being around water. LOL

Picasa, as basic as it is has a few useful and speed tools to play with. Just remember your only looking at thumbnail since it's none destructive. You have to Save if you wish the changes to become part of the original file. I Still think CC has a better de-hazing tool. I'm just not part of the CC Club.

Ex Framingham person here.

Another Free Program, that has impressed me was Light Zone. You can waste half a day in there just playing with sliders. But it has achieved some good results for me.

Its the wrong time of day. It appears you are shooting into the light. The image is quite flat. As others have said a polarizer would help but only if you positioned to 90 degrees of the light source. I also see a some chromatic aberration on the ship's top edges. That can be corrected in post. Haze is evident. The image has too many problems and of poor quality for it to be useful to determine if the camera or lens is an issue.
