Is there a tripod collar available that will work on a Nikon 28-300mm f3.3-5.6 lens? Nikon returned a "Not available".
I'm looking for the "flip to portrait" feature.

There is no tripod collar available for that lens that I am aware of.

There's no place to put one on that lens.

OK and thanks!

I'm just uneasy looking at all that torque being exerted on a tiny, soft metal screw. (My mind says, " dangling".) I'm reluctant to shoot panoramas with that lens as that requires extended operation in portrait.mode while "whipping" the beast around.

Primes look less hostile but then I'm giving up any thought of a " walk-around" lens and back to lugging along a bushel of candidates.

Sigh! Iguess it's just another reality of reaching age 87!

I think you need not be too concerned. At only 800g you're not likely to over-stress anything with that lens.

I've been using that lens for a few years, and everything is still attached. Whether it's on a tripod or handheld, the same forces apply. Take a look here and see if anything will fit, or be made to fit.

Actually this is true if you are holding the camera without supporting the lens. Most people support the lens with their left hand which helps distribute the load.

There is no room on the lens for a tripod ring because it doesn't warrant one.

Look at L brackets. That is the answer!

I support the lens when I take a picture, but not when the camera is slung over my shoulder. Even the big 70-200mm lens will stay attached when it's hanging from a camera that's hanging from a shoulder.

An L bracket is what I use. It gets a good grip on the camera to distribute the load.

It is too small of a lens for a collar. You could get an L bracket for the body and you problem will be solved. Or purchase a tripod head that tilts. Not sure why yours does not do that already though.

You didn't say what Nikon camera you have but here's one for the D-750 from B&H Photo.

You do have good cause for concern. ALL lenses 200mm and longer SHOULD have a tripod collar ! - But, the manufacturers CHEAP out !

I think I would put/adapt a long arca/swiss plate on the bottom of your camera to help balance it and then use a flip bracket like this Stroboframe Vertaflip - http://www.ebay.com/itm/131271024418?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Hi Larry. I couldn't get you link to work. I think the person selling it pulled the listing. I did find it on Amazon though.

As for having a collar on this lens, I own this lens myself. I too, think they should have a collar on longer lenses, but I don't think it is a matter of being cheap in this case. The lens, when collapsed, is just about 4 inches in length. There really isn't any place to insert a collar on this particular lens. It is designed for being as compact as possible and also provide some telephoto usage in the package.

It is more of a carry about travel lens and not a tripod one in my opinion.

Oh yea, love you DIY support.
