Canon 17-40L f4 lens: Does anyone have one of these lenses and what do you think of it?
I've had it since 2004 and it is incredibly sharp, very little if any chromatic aberration at any settings. The price has gone up about 50% since I bought mine.
I have one and consider it one of my best lens. Great pictures using a full frame camera, 1DSII.
I've had the 17-40 since '04 as well. I find it to be an excellent lens. My only regret is that I didn't buy the 16-35 instead. The extra stop is worth the extra $400, IMHO. I shoot a lot of low light, but since the10d died recently, I am looking to replace it with a 50d and that should give me that stop back.
Thank you all. I rented one and it arrived today and I think it is one of the sharpest lenses that I have tried. I really like the weight and though I rented the 24-70 f2.8 and loved it, carrying it around did get rather tiresome after a while. I would like lower light capability, but not the weight. Thanks for the tips.
Hi: I have this lens and a Sigma 12mm-24mm, I still haven't been able to decide which is better.
I purchased this lense from a fellow Hedgehog member for my Canon Rebel camera and I'm very pleased with it. I recently took it to New Zealand and came home with amazing photos. I purchased this lense for architecture and landscape shots, and I've been pleasantly surprised to find that it works well for photos of people, too. I plan to purchase a polarizing filter for it soon. I do recommend it.
Buy it. You'll like it. I ga ran tee it!

jw pulliam,
Yes, I not only have one, I use it. Not every day but when I want images taken within those mm parameters and also sharp and with great colors. Yes, it is only f/4 but I have never found that a problem. Would I recommend buying one? ... yes, if you are going to be using it on a full sensor body such as the 5D or 1DS. If are planning to use this lens on a smaller sensor camera, such as a 7D, consider a 10-22mm lens that will give you a 16 - 35 effective mm lens. Whatever ... enjoy and have fun, J. Goffe
Remember the f/stops here!
Thanks for the advice and I have rented one to try out and like it for the crisp, accurate color. I'm not sure this has the range I want since I have two 40D's that I use and haven't any plans to upgrade camera bodies for a while. Most of the experts that I have read advise improving the lens quality rather than upgrading camera bodies and this would be a first step in that direction with this lens. Thanks again for the advice.
I use mine a lot and get great quality.
My customers notice the quality too and request me specifically to take pics of different locations.
