Licking his chops, Indigo Bunting, Male 2-3 years? Molting? Hainesport, NJ 8/8/2015. A friend of mine and I watched this guy, first in the distance in a shaded area, and then as he gradually moved toward us, eventually perching in a sunny area where this photo was taken. Since this was my first photo of an Indigo Bunting, I was pretty excited! I did wish for prettier surroundings, but the bird itself is pretty cool to see on its own. On the computer, I noticed that the color, instead of indigo, was more of an azure on much of the body with some dark blue/indigo shade on the face. At first I thought the sun had brightened/altered its coloring. But according to one photo I saw, the azure color is typical for a second year male, so Im guessing this guy is between his second and third year. Very nice. The catchlight in the eye and broken background complement the image.

Thanks, MtnMan. I'm a big fan of eye catch light! As to the background, I wasn't paying any attention to it! I just hoped the 400mm would keep it reasonably blurry.
Thanks to your comment, I'll try to pay more attention to the background.

Thanks, Canonshot!
What's a study shot? :)
I am a serious birding nut and photograph birds as often as I can from the Outer Banks, Delaware, NJ, PA, with a yearly trip to Magee Marsh east of Toledo in Ohio when the warblers stack up against Lake Erie during the spring migration. Here in PA, there is seldom a day that I am not photographing or watching birds.
With that said, I use UHH to find good photos to study species I don't see often or lack a recent photo of. Your image became my photo study image for today. My wife and I have already spent some time discussing your photo. It is just what we do. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for that explanation. I'm honored to be of help!
Someday I hope to visit Magee Marsh during the warbler migration.
