NIkon d3300 looking for lens in the 18-300mm focal range

A friend of mine just purchased his first DSLR a Nikon D3300, it came with an 18-55mm and a 55-200mm. He's looking for something like an 18-300 Tamron or possibly a Sigma. Any suggestions for a lens with that general focal range?

Tamron has a 16-300. I don't know if it is any good, usually lenses with that focal range aren't, but it may suffice for some.

Nikon makes 2 of them. One is an 18-300mm f3.5-5.6 the other is an 18-300mm f3.5-6.3 They both have VR and are gelded.

I probably should have mentioned price is a factor and that Nikon is above his budget, I believe he's looking in the under $500 range.

He could get a New Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR for $399.95.

Good luck with that. Maybe Vivitar has something in that range that might work unless you're looking at refurbished or used. :XD: Some posters maintain Vivitar makes good stuff. I'm not one of them. Maybe Rokinon or something like that.

The Sigma 18-300 is between $500-600 last I looked. The Tamron 16-300 is around as much. The Sigma 18-250 Macro OS HSM is a good all-in-one lens and costs only around $350.
All-in-one lenses like these are not as sharp as shorter range lenses especially at the long end. Some find them to be sharp enough for their uses. Others don't. Many people like them for travel, and many like them as walk-around lenses. I use a Sigma 18-300 as my walk-around lens. I find that I don't miss shots that I used to miss while changing lenses, and I like saving weight by carrying one lens instead of two. I also don't print larger than 8.5x11. The difference between a good all-in-one and a good shorter range zoom shows up more in larger prints.

I have and use an 18-55 & a 55-300 Nikon, between the two lenses they cover most everything except Ultra Wide Angle.
I agree that the OP should consider the 55-300 - not expensive and decent quality.
The 55-200 for me was a waste and I sold it quickly and bought the 55-300

First I want to thank Steve for posting my question, and I also want to thank all of you who responded ...
Actually, I am not certain what my budget is, but I do think the Nikon 16-300mm at about $900+ will probably exceed it.
I am looking for an 'all in one lens' ... I obviously am not a professional - the D3300 being my first DSLR - but I enjoy taking pics and on a recent Mediterranean cruise changing lenses was a pain in the butt ...
My 'plan' is to sell my 35mm camera and accessories and put that towards the purchase of a 16-300mm lens ...
Any suggestions are welcome ...

Last week I purchased the Tamron 16-300mm f/3.5 with VC (lens stabilisation).
Appended are three of the early photos, the first taken at 16mm and the second at 300mm. About 300 feet camera to subjects in the 300mm image.
Both were hand held, both were shot on a low res camera (D70s - 6 Mp).
I have straightened verticals in the 16mm version, neither image has added sharpening at all.
The third image (Shot on a D200) was taken at 250mm focal length, about 8 feet camera to flowers. Again no sharpening has been applied. (I think there is a little camera shake evident in this image.)
Overall I am very pleased with the results, and would repurchase if I lost it.
