I've used some kind of camera since I was a kid. More recently, I became a crazy, birding-photography hobbyist and took the plunge to buy the Canon 500 mm F4L II lens. I've also bought some other "L glass" and enjoy using those lenses.
For an older singles group to which I belong, I run a monthly photography club meeting for a small group - about 5 - 8 people. I teach techniques I've learned both for composition and camera/lens use and settings.
I give an assignment each month and recently have been choosing from the Ugly Hedgehog topics. The most recent topic we used was "100 steps."
I've learned plenty from running this club and of course am still an amateur. Photography is a wonderful hobby and I'm very happy for its opportunities to learn and improve!
Me in 2012. Now I have a little less hair! (Yikes! I didn;t realize this photo would be so large!)

Welcome to UHH.
The Oyster Catcher is fantastic.
Thank you! I noticed that the resolution/detail was significantly reduced.
Should I upload the file differently somehow to improve that?
Thanks! Earnest, was it? :-)

If you select "store original" before you upload, a higher resolution will be available to be downloaded.
Welcome to the family, Den!
Thanks, Mac.
Is that something I should do now?
OK. And how can I delete a duplicate post? :?:

Welcome, Den. You will learn a lot here on The Hog.
If you click on "quote reply", we'll know which post you are responding to. That becomes important on some of the multi-page threads. Someone had to teach me that early on!
Thanks for that all-important tip, Mike! Ill be sure to use that in the future!

Hi, Den, and welcome to UHH.
The software used to run this forum has a routine that automatically resizes images to a maximum width of 400 pixels. In the case of your avatar image, the size was increased, and probably in the case of your other images the size was increased. As others have mentioned, there is an option to include a download link that will allow viewers to see the original.
Many people have mentioned that the resizing of images results in degraded quality, and I agree with them on that. You can either resize your images yourself to a maximum width of 400 pixels, or check the "store original" box when you upload images and just suffer through having your images degraded by the re-sizing.
The reason for resizing images to a maximum width of 400 pixels (and apparently a minimum width of 400 pixels as well?) is because otherwise most pages in the forum would require horizontal scrolling in order to read anything.

You could if you wanted, but definitely do it in the future. Remember to post future pictures in the Photo Gallery section. There are also sections for Photo Critique, Macro, Birds in Flight, etc.
One thing I like to do when posting pictures is to include the camera, lens and settings I used. Doing that is not mandatory and not many people do it, but I like to know that information when viewing pictures, so I add it.
