IMHO, shoot Nikon, use Nikon Glass. Remember Nikon lens resale is always better than a third party vendor. And, Nikon lenses will always fit future Nikon cameras. Not so with Tamron or Sigma. A Nikon lens is much more of an investment. For what you say you want to shoot I would think a zoom is good. I personally like the 18 - 300mm. Good luck with your hobby!

As a beginner and new to photography, I currently have 18-105mm lens kit when I purchased my D7000, and then a few months later I bought 50mm f/1.8 prime lens (both are Nikon lenses).

If I need to have another lens with a little more reach, what would be a decent telephoto lens for me to start of with?
I am thinking of having Tamron 18-270mm which, according to the review in this forum, is also good as a "walk around" lens but then my 18-105mm will become redundant....

I like travelling, and I need something handy.

Seeking some advices from fellow hoggers.
Thank you.

Thank you coj,
I agree with the Nikon 18-300mm for more range.
Kind regards, Andi.

I have a D7000 and own the 18-105 and also the 50mm f1.8 prime, all Nikkor lenses. I use those lenses for different things. I also bought the Nikkor 70-300mm f4-5.6 and it is a good value telephoto lens, sharp, good autofocus, and works well in good light. The 70-300 compliments the 18-105 as well. If you want a faster lens, then that comes with a much bigger price.

Hi JD750,
Having the 70-300 is an option to extend my current 18-105 reach.
Do you have any pics you took in low light, is there any big different compared to 55-300mm f4.5-5.6 ?.
Thank you JD.

I had the Nikon 70-300 VR for several years but I traded it for the Nikon 55-300 VR because of the difference in weight. They are very similar in image quality. Besides the difference is weight, the 70-300 VR focuses faster and has a little better build quality.

The attached pics were taken hand held, shortly after sunset in the shadow of my garage. Hand held D7000, ISO3200, 300mm f5.6 (1) and f6.3. It's a decent but not a great low light lens. No f4-5.6 lens is going to be great in low light. For that you would need to get something like the behemoth 70-200, f2.8.

I don't have any experience with the 55-300mm.

Thanks JD,
It's a good pic taken by 70-300.
A friend of mine is going to lend me the 70-300 lens for a day or so. Let me try with my D7000 and see the result before I decided to purchase a new one ....
Cheers, Andi

Thank you for the compliment!

I think that is an excellent plan!
