I spent last Sunday morning taking pictures of my grandchildren enjoying a local splash pad. I mounted my 300mm f/4.5 AI-s lens on my D700. Most images were shot at between 1/500 and 1/1500. I think the results are spectacular, sharp and well exposed. Manual focus takes me back to when this lens was new ( 30 years ago! LOL ), but if you can handle old glass you can get great results on a budget.
Most recently I bought a Nikon D610. This is my first full frame camera.
I still have some lenses from the film era, manual lenses that have been converted to AI so that I can use them with digital. One of those lenses is a 50mm f1.4 Nikkor S from the mid sixties that I used often with my Nikon F. After conversion it works beautifully with the D610 and yes, the images are sharp and with vivid colors in spite of been a single coated lens although I can see in the light through it reflections in amber and blue.
Using these lenses is a great experience for me because I love using the lens to set manually in it my apertures. It is a different experience.
