Alcona County, MI Quilt Trail, Part 2, "Barn Quilts" on Other Bldgs.
I say, "Barn Quilts" on other buildings because the whole idea originated with putting these on barns. It is becoming so popular that folks want to make these "quilts" but apparently have no barns to put them on. So, I don't know what else to call them.
They're not actually quilts & they're not actually on barns. Kind of like "Grape Nuts", they're not grapes & they're not nuts.

how are they hung and what happens when it rains, snows, etc? What are the dimensions of the quilts? Or, are these really paintings?

Just ran across your question from my post of five years ago. Most of these are on plywood squares, about 4ft x 4ft, made with acrylic paints. Probably just screwed on to the side of the building. Pretty impervious to rain & snow.
