I was told in a photography class to keep the original photos on the memory card and store it as a safety precaution after downloading them to my computer. Does anyone do this? Is it a good idea or just an expensive idea? :|

I don't.

I use a 1TB external drive for any photos that I really care about (family shots etc)

But my everyday efforts?

Nope...I throw away 98% of what I shoot and the 2% that I keep go on the external drive.

At 35.00 for an SD card that's pretty expensive back up.

Hi jaedmund: I don't keep anything on my memory car, once I've downloaded any keepers on to the computer and backed them up on Carbonite. For $60 a year it's very cheap storage and I have had to use them to restore files to my computer. Took almost 4 days to do that but then I had something like 19,000 files to restore and a good many of those raw format photographs. I also havs a small external hard drive with some book keeping files on it. Just another way to preserve those important files.

Maybe the 'pro' was meaning keep the pictures on the card until you have the images saved into other storeage options. From experience I know this is a good idea. One time I made the mistake of erasing from the 'puter a set of images that I thought I had copied, only to realize too late they were not yet copied. If I had not erased the compact flash card, I could have reloaded them on the computer and saved them.

I have a friend who was on a trip, and he had trouble with his laptop, so he just purchased more cards and came home with lots of cards with all his images on them. An expensive way to save your pictures!

I save mine on external hard drives, and have in past used also DVD's. The card gets erased and re-used after I have saved the images.

I just about to fill my second 2TB external drive... I did some quick figuring and it would have cost me a small fortune had I kept all those pics on Sd's. This is my next step...Drobo

...Good investment, I think. Add as you go.

when I am away on a shoot I download to my laptop and to a portable drive and keep the memory card until I arrive home and all the photos are on the main computer and the backup drive

Never advise my students to do this, a lot of folks do.

As in many other things in life there is no "right " answer, comes down to personal perfences,

Frankly, i have never heard another professional or educator make that suggestion but that doesn't mean they don't or haven't , just not my experience.

I have three small, inexpensive external drives, ranging in size from 250GB to a larger WD 1TB. It's no big deal to back everything up to all three drives. And yes, I do wear a belt and suspenders.

Speaking of external drives, manufacturers make different quality drives. I am thinking of Western Digital. They use colors to designate Good, Better, Best. I always spend just a little bit more to get what they say is their best.

SD cards are too small and delicate (in my opinion) to rely on for long-term storage. Same with flash drives. I use them both for temporary storage.
