Lightroom says it does not recognize CR2 files from my Canon SX50. How do I edit in LR?

Your camera came with some software call Digital Photo Professional. You can use that to export to JPEG or TIFF on an individual picture basis.
I have, but don't usually use LR, but I think Adobe has an Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter that deals with the various propriety raw formats for different vendors.
You may need to be on up to date versions of LR to make sure your camera is supported.
Over to people who know what they are talking about now!

What version of LR? And are the updates current?
LR5.7 on one of my machines and LR CC6.1 on the other recognize my wife's SX50 files just fine.

LR 5.7 and Adobe Ceative Cloud on Win10. Updated and made compatible by Adobe Employee yesterday. When I try to import the CR2 files it says it is not a recognizable file type. I've been using Sony RAW files all along. Just bought an SX50 to use as a "have in car" most of the time just in case.

Could be Adobe is behind on meshing with Win10.
My machine is still Win7 Pro.
I have LR 5.7 and it imports my CR2 files from SX50 with no problem.

Are you importing directly from the camera or from the card in a card reader?

If you haven't done so already, reboot your computer and try again. Make sure you have the latest updates from Adobe. Those are the only reasons I can think of that it won't work. Although, I did read a day or two ago that someone couldn't see PNG's in Win 10 and they looked for a codex. I doubt this is your problem but as a last resort I'd look into that.
get rid of Windows 10! The latest LR is 6.1, I believe, if you've updated your software with CC. I have CR2s and copy them to DNG in LR no issues on Win 8.1 (which I like BTW).

Windows 10 may have some issues, it may even have some issues in relation to LR and and .CR2 files from an SX50, but there are a lot of possible causes for the problems here that may have absolutely nothing to do with Windows 10.
Many software problems are caused by user configuration issues or other user related issues and not the underlying technology.
So far I have been very impressed with how well the Windows 10 migration is going and after a couple of teething problems during the install - which I caused - everything is working fine.
I'm still using Windows 7 for day to day work and am testing Windows 10, but so far any problems have been my problems, not the software.

There is a problem with win 10 and the LR catalogue. There are two fixes provided by adobe but neither souls work for me so I had to work with above through remote to be able to open a catalogue. That works fine now. Last night I came in and put my memory card croon my SX50 and when I attempted to import the photos it told me it did not recognize the CR2 format. I'm sure I'll find the reason soon. Thanks for your suggestions.
1. Make a folder on your desktop, name it, and keep track of the name.
2. Download your photos using Canon EOS Utiliy. Open EOS Utility, in "Prefrences" and select the specific file you made on the destop in "destination file" you may have to "browse" for it. Once selected your ready to download your camera.
3. Once you've downloaded the camera into the folder, open Lightroom. In the "file" menu select "import" You'll get a window asking from where, select the "desktop" and then the folder you made. On the right you'll see the destination, select the same folder. Be sure the window is for converting to DNG. Select "Import" now your RAW photos will be in the new folder on your desktop, along with DNG copies, and your photos will be in your catalog for editing. I hope this helps.
