I'm just going to add my unhelpful $.02. I've only been a UHH member for a little over a year, but when I joined, Helen welcomed me and presented me with a gift VIP account with Adorama.

I have since bought a number of items (bags, lighting, lenses, filters, etc.) and have always been 100% pleased with the service, quality and performance. Having Helen monitor this forum is a big plus, as I'm sure everyone can agree.

In my part time, I work in a local, family-owned retail business. I've noticed that customers generally fall into several categories.

There is the "bargain hunter." They will generally buy cheaper products, and some will even attempt to haggle the price. At the opposite end, there are the "quality" shoppers, who carefully research their product purchases, and expect to "get what they pay for" (this is a pretty good rule of thumb in any case!). Then, a large majority are shoppers who want the right product for their needs and welcome honest information and advice, and ultimately go from "curious consumer" to the "loyal, informed customer."

Since small businesses rely heavily on their reputation to stay in business, Adorama, through their reputation, past performance, and Helen's presence on this board, have earned my trust. I do not find their practices deceptive, and I am confident that any transaction I conduct with them will be fairly and competently managed.

Bargain hunters don't care. To them, it's all about the cost (to them). Unless one is in a business that caters to bargain hunters (I am not), I do not need their waste of my time and resources.

Just a thought to turn a negative into a positive ....keep the tripod and use it to hold an umbrella and strobe for portrait lighting. Surely you take pictures of people once in a while? ....George

I purchased a Sunpak Quanaray tripod from Adorama. It was on sale for $40 from $100, with free shipping. Upon receiving it, I determined that it wasn't suitable for my purposes -- it weighed over 6 pounds. Adorama's return policy, which they tout to be the best in the business, calls for their normal shipping charge to be deducted from the refund on items that were sold with free shipping. In my case that meant that I paid $18 for return shipping and they deducted another $17 for their normal shipping charge. Net, net, I got $5 of my $40 returned to me. I don't think that qualifies as the best return policy in the business. In fact, I think it STINKS!
Has any one else had this experience?
I purchased a Sunpak Quanaray tripod from Adorama.... (show quote)

Perhaps, you should read the information on Adorama's, or any vendor's web site BEFORE you buy.
       1. Adorama's tripod description says it weighs 6.1 lbs. A few reviews said that it's heavy... and you're complaining!
       2. There's a link to Adorama's return policy. It says "Items that qualified for free shipping that are being returned will have our shipping charges deducted from the refund or credit. The return shipping cost (the cost to send an item back to us) is not refundable."
Adorama clearly described the product; and both explained and followed their return policy. I think you should be upset with only yourself.

By the way, Amazon does not always pay shipping on returned items. Their web site says "If you return an item using a prepaid method (dropoff or pickup) from the Online Returns Center, and the reason for return is not a result of an Amazon error, the cost of return shipping will be deducted from your refund unless your item qualifies for a free return."

Trust me when I tell you I stand by the consumer at every "right" turn. Let me explain why YOU are WRONG, repeat, WRONG. Do you know of ANY postal service that ships for free? No, there isn't. Did Adorama deliver the item, intact, at the price listed with shipping included? YES. The REASON for your return was solely and entirely your own personal choice and not because of material defect. If there were something wrong with the item, Adorama would pay shipping both ways on the return, I know that as fact from first hand experience. If it's on YOU, what do you expect? Somebody to pay for YOUR mistake? Seriously? On the rare occasion I make a mistake I state upfront the mistake was mine and go from there. The return policy is both FAIR and pretty much standard with top sellers including Amazon. There is NO restocking fee, just the actual cost. Sellers that offer "free returns", which is common with some shoe sellers, build in the price of returns into the price, meaning your paying for returns whether you return or not. Would you prefer to PAY MORE UPFRONT?

Good response. However, you should move away from the computer, go outside, take a few deep breaths, close your eyes, and relax. :D

I have never had to return anything to Adorama simply because I did my homework first. I'm sure in the item description the weight was disclosed. If not, a quick phone call would have certainly got you the answer.

So you knew what the return policy was before the purchase, you knew what the tripod weighed, and you're complaining???

Besides, you get what you pay for. This wasn't/isn't the best tripod.

I don't believe Amazon deducts their shipping from an item they shipped to you for free. They consider the few that they have to pay for this way like an advertising or overhead cost.

I get most things from Amazon shipped "free" due to Amazon prime membership. My wife keeps it worth our while...particularly since so far we don't pay sales tax on purchases from them.

Once bought a couple of flash drives from Amazon. One of them was defective. End result was they said not to return, just discard it and they shipped a replacement, free. Amazing policy and that's why I use Amazon.

If a customer wishes to return an item he only needs to call our CS Team and he will be advised how much the 'free' shipping element was. I can't see how adding that to every product page would help, because if a customer returns 2 or 3 items, the shipping cost would not be the same as 2 or 3 items returned separately.

does not have to be an exact price for every item but classes - up to $10, up to $20, up to $30 just to get some idea.

calling up once received is after the fact

just my 2 cents

I would suggest that next time, do the math. It would have been better to keep the tripod!

B & H is another story completely. Many years ago, in the darkroom days, I purchased a large easel from them. When it arrived, I took it out of the box, carried it downstairs, realized it was too big to fit under my enlarger and packaged it back up. It was literally out of the shipping box for less than 5 minutes. When I sent it back to B&H, they refused it and sent it back to me (charging me shipping again), saying it was a used item and had wear marks on it.

We certainly regret your lingering dissatisfaction over this incident which, as you said took place, "Many years ago." Despite the passage of time (and as a result my inability to confirm or refute any of this anecdote) we are sorry for your dissatisfaction and the undimmed ire it stirred.

I'm truly sorry you feel this way, however our return policy is clearly posted on our website. I believe you will find that we are not the only big camera store in NYC with this policy!

If I can explain; 'free' outbound shipping isn't actually 'free'; it is paid for by Adorama - it is our gift to you. However, we do believe that if an item is returned that the 'gift' also needs to be returned!
If an item is returned because it is faulty, or if a customer requests an exchange for a different model, there would be no deduction of the charge.

I hope this clarifies the situation; if not - or if you have any additional questions or concerns, you are most welcome to email me directly: Helen@adorama.com. I'm here to make sure that all your experiences with Adorama are fantastic:)

Clearly stated and it is a reasonable and fair policy in my opinion.

I've been a customer for many years and have always received excellent service and been treated well by Adorama.

Aside from any of this, what impresses me, is that , both Adorama and B&H monitor this forum and respond as rapidly as they do. I have used both and have only good things to say about them.

Thank you all. This is very gratifying.

BTW comparing Adorama and B&H to Amazon is not an apples-to-apples comparison. Adorama and B&H sell mostly electronic components for which price competition is fierce and markups are notoriously low. Amazon sells these too but they also sell thousands (tens of thousands?) of items that are not in this genre, for which price competition is less fierce and for which markups are considerably more favorable to the retailer. With that cushion, Amazon has flexibility Adorama and B&H do not. And yet, we still offer what we hope most consider excellent service, reasonable prices, a fair return policy and free shipping on thousands of items. YMMV

Same for sale items from B&H. Very disappointing. I bought a wireless keyboard with solar recharge batteries. the keyboard turned out to be less than full size and the space bar stuck. I hated the product and asked for money back. I had to pay for return shipping.

this experience reinforced my notion that Amazon is my go to source. I've never had a problem with returns to Amazon.

I agree. You would think that B & H and Adorama, that complete a great amount of sales, and the ratio of returns is minuscule, would adopt that sort of policy, and write it off as a cost of business, and in turn get more business. I bought from them a long time ago, never had to return anything and was satisfied with my purchase. Times are different!
