Has anyone experience of using "Capture One Express" for post photo processing? I would appreciate your views on the quality perhaps compared to Photoshop.

Many thanks in advance for your comments.

Yes I have about two years back. About a half year afterwards I went the Pro route and never looked back. The Express version didn't have a couple things I "thought" I needed. Now that I have it, I guess I did. LoL

You've likely heard that Capture One has the best RAW converter out there, it also the fastest. As for quality, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That said, you'll get many different opinions. (Let the flame wars start!)

The one true thing is that many other people/pro's have compared Capture One with other programs and for proper coloring (especially on skin), Cap One has always come out on top.

The other top programs are great also but I found them to be very confusing as I don't "live" on any one type of post program. To be honest, I think every "Express" version offered by any post program company will have a couple short comings somewhere. They want to sell to better version.

Look through the many articles here.

I've got a friend that has a code which will let you get a percentage off the purchase of Capture One. I think it about 10%. If you're interested let me know and I'll ask him about it.

What model do you have?

Phase One, Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, and a bunch of others cameras should work just fine. (If there be a "just released" model they may be in the process of adding it.)

I've found that Capture One seems to have prior knowledge and make additions before a new camera is released. To be fair, the other post processing mfg's often do the same.

D40X, D3200, D5300 all about a year old, I'l down load and give it a shoot. Thanks for the lead. I often move between soft ware find some have better renditions then others in selected functions.

Capture One Express and Pro 8 are excellent. Top shelf. Image quality is as good as and often considered better than Photoshop.
They have many tutorials, webinars and constant tips coming from the 'Image Quality Professor'.
The Express version is only for Sony now and I believe it is free.

I don't have a Sony, and I didn't pay for it, I got it on the 30 day trial, I've already uninstalled it. I just don't have the time to learn a new program. But from what I saw and did in it, It appears to be a pretty in depth program.

Bill, I have to admit, learning where certain controls are is a little difficult to remember. In a short time you'll find out where they are. It's just a simple process to modify things from there and you see the results instantly as you do the modifications. Unlike some other programs where you have to learn where the controls are AND learn the technique to operate it.

One of the many things I like is the quick ability to make a bunch of copies of the same image, modify each one totally different, and compare which I like best! Then keep them all or just the best. (Look up "Variant".)

I've not moved to CO Pro 8 yet, still use CO Pro 7. Pro 8 has a quick ability to change the white ballance in several areas on the same image. That's great for speedy corrections for event photography in rooms with florescent lights, windows, and candle lights on tables.

Other post program can do that too but not nearly as fast and easy. I'll be upgrading before to long.

Sorry if I sound like a commercial. I'll shut up for now.

I evaluated Capture1 (C1) Pro7 and Adobe Creative Cloud (CC) for photographers in June of 2014. I used them both couldn't decide in 30 days which to buy so bought C1 Pro7 during a big promotion/sale and suscribed to CC for a year. A few weeks later C1Pro 8 came out. It was not a free upgrade, offered at a discount, but I had just bought Pro7. I declined. Then I bought my D750 and Pro7 won't open its RAW files. Apparently I will need to pay for pro 8 to get support for my D750. I think that is a pretty crappy way to treat customers, owners of older versions. Meanwhile Adobe released a CC update shortly after the D750 release and Lightroom and Photoshop both opened my D750 raw files. Since then I have gotten multiple updates from Adobe. For 1/3 the cost of C1.

So because of that, I rarely use C1 now. Adobe won this challenge because of better customer support. I'm happy with the CC, I think it's a good value It's hard to beat Photoshop for raw editing power. I have gotten some very pleasing results using photoshop. And Adobe has been providing CC updates as promised. I renewed my yearly CC subscription the other day.

Yes I will stipulate, C1 does have a great raw processor and images look great they have more "pop" and clarity upon translation. That saves time. I really liked that about C1. But what good is that if it won't open my cameras raw files?

Capture One Express: I haven't tried it. Capture One Pro 8 is a wonderful RAW converter/editor. I switched from Nikon Capture NX 2 when the new Capture NX-D did not have local adjustments. IMO the quality of the resulting images from Capture One Pro 8 is better than what I was getting from Nikon's Capture NX 2, and I used Nikon's software for years. (I also looked at purchasing Lightroom, but like the results of Capture One Pro better.)
