Your lens is capturing the atmospheric dispersion, the same thing that makes the stars look as though they're blinking. Remedy don't shoot low to the horizon, above 30 degrees is the rule of thumb. I do like the effect in your image though, Kudos

Astronomers didn't know the heavenly bodies and formations had color until the advent of color film. The instantaneous nature of light allows for only a glimpse of it to the human eye. When color film began being used in the observatories, the light accumulated on the film after long exposures and they discovered a wonderful variety of colors in the universe.

So true. The photos are wonderful. Keep at it :)

First, it looks like Crater Lake. If so, it is probably smoke from all the fires out there. I was out there a few years ago and smoke just hangs out in the sky, seems like it never clears.

Thank you for the kind comments -

Yup, Crater Lake, Oregon and Hurricane Ridge, Olympic National Park, Washington. Beautiful parts of the world.

Hi Ron,
What you captured in the lower left is called "airglow", which is not aurora but a similar atmospheric phenomenon. Sunlight interacts with oxygen molecules and at night these molecules are energized and give off green. I shot Crater Lake as well this month and you see the green airglow in the bottom left of my image. http://www.mdieterichphoto.com/p28115804/h5723d5b1#h5723d5b1

For info on airglow http://www.universetoday.com/112237/how-to-see-airglow-the-green-sheen-of-night/
Beautiful shot by the way!

Cheers,
Matt Dieterich

Wow those are very kind words! I'm happy you enjoy my photos. Feel free to follow on Facebook www.facebook.com/mattdieterichphotography or shoot me an email if you have questions.

Airglow is amazing to capture and I was amazed when I first saw it on my camera screen shooting in Badlands National Park. The banding structure was just insane!
