I only delete in-camera if I see, on the little camera screen, that the pic is no good. Otherwise, I'll wait and transfer pics to my computer. Ensure all pics transferred, then while the card is connected to my computer I'll delete the pics from the card. After that, I'll delete pics from my computer as I see I don't like them.

Hi tfran: I have been taught that after you have transfered the pictures you want to keep, (you can delete those you don't want in camera), to your computer from your camera by tether, or memory card via digital media reader and backed them up on either an external hard drive, CD or on line storage like Carbonite. Then and only then delete them from you memory card and taking it one step farther format the memory card. That makes for a cleaner memory card. Hope this helps.

I don't bother with deleting them off the card in the camera. Once I am sure they are accounted for off the card somewhere safely I simply format the card in the camera.

Be sure to format (In the camera) each time after you've transferred your pix to the computer. (creates a new clean file)

I load everything to the computer and then delete what I don't want from the computer. The LCD screen on the camera isn't big enough to give a good reading of the quality of the photograph. After I have everything on the computer I format the card in the camera to clear it.

I download them via a card reader. Backup pics to a dedicated hd when importing. Then just put the card back in camera and format it.

Do any of you keep the originals as another safety step...always having the originals?

One should format a card each and every time you have taken all the photos off the card and saved them to your computer. This should be done in your camera. To simply delete the photo does not clean the card, and therefore can leave small bits of information on the card that can at some point keep you from writing over it. Formatting the card wipes it clean, and assures you that you will not ruin a photo because you had old bits of information still stored on the card.

I transfer to the computer then insure the transfer was successful and next I reformat the card in the camera.

Anybody have authoritative information on what actually happens to the card in the camera when it's reformatted in the camera? Card scrubbed clean? File allocation table deleted or emptied, but data left on the card?

The point is, it happens almost in an instant. That strongly suggests that it is not wiping all prior data from the card memory. Anybody who's done that to a computer disc knows that's a process that takes a lot longer than an instant.

No speculation, sumising or guessing, please. Only answer if you really know.
