Mdorn,
I certainly understand the need for space but I have, in the past, dumped some things I really needed later. I have three external hard drives at a terabite each. I have a Sony A850 with Carl Zeis 24-50 and with the 24 meg chip, I can enlarge maybe a 10% spot no one else saw at a gathering and get a near perfect 8x10 to show for it.
I save almost everything. (Yes,if you ask, I have 185,000+ digitals) Moving some to DVDs especially family, general nature, special events, etc.
All the best.

I USE TO keep most everything (except those really BAD!) with my improvement in photography, I find myself going back & filtering out those really not worth keeping .. and I will probably continue to do it this way till I die. Family, of the kids, grand kids & now great grand kids .. I keep most eveything! (that's our history! .. GOOD OR BAD! HE HE)
I not only have everything I've shot, I have everything my father shot before me. My files are not as organized as my fathers...but then, neither am I. Here is what I think is important to consider. Countless times...COUNTLESS...I have been asked for a print or file of someone who has recently died or for some other reason is now important. Photos I, at the time thought insignificant become, for one reason or another, really priceless years later. I was taught as a teenager...NEVER, EVER, EVER THROW AWAY A NEGATIVE. I am attempting to maintain that with digital files but fear the current storage techniques will prove inferior in the distant future.

I keep about half. I am like MT Shooter in that I will take 3 or 4 photos of the same thing trying to get the best angles, etc. I don't usually delete photos rihgt away unless they are blurry or just bad shots, I usually go back after about 30 days and by then I will know which ones are keepers.
I keep photos that I take and throw everyone else's photos away..........
I rarely throw a photo away. I figure if I took it, I must have had a purpose.
I keep most everything, unless the picture is soft, or it isn't what I was looking for. Then I save it on my external hard drive.
OH, in response to last answer .. I have everything my father shot .. mostly B & W .. (all on photo paper of 'course, which takes up alot of storage space!) NOW, THAT IS FAMILY HISTORY! I made a few DVD's (9 in all) .. most all the people in those are gone now & I love to watch them talking, laughing on trips we took together etc .. it brings them all back to life .. PRECIOUS MEMORIES! :) I made most of those before the passings, so everyone saw them selves in the movies! :) Preserve the past as best you can!
Im not sure what % i keep but i have around 89,000+ Photos On a hard drive
Good answer Barb.. I still have a lot of pictures I shot when I was Deputy Coroner. Those need to go. Nobody would be interested in vewing them, it's been to long now!!
I KEEP TYHE GOOD ONES AND DELETE THE JUNKY ONES
If the photo is not of family or vacation time (I keep almost all of them), I keep about 50-60% as I review them in the camera. Once I start looking at them on the monitor, another 10-20% are sent to the trash can.
I feel so much better reading about how many of you keep almost everything! And here I thought I was the only one who did that. Thanks all of you for making me feel so good!

Mdorn, br I certainly understand the need for spac... (
show quote)
It's not really the space I am concerned with. It's a personal preference, or just my OCD. I can't stand clutter. This spills off into other facets of my life as well. Keeping stuff I'll never use seems wasteful to me. I really don't want to leave behind a legacy of photos my kids will have to sift through someday. I guess I'm paying it forward in a sense.
