This is a 17th century house that belonged to a famous explorer,Powell Cotton but is now a wonderful museum. The museum is not open until Easter so this shot was from the gate outside.

Nice but would it not have been better to cut the drive in half and gotten more of the house above, even if there were to be some trees in the image?

I agree ! You have a large tree to the right. Take a few steps back (if you can) to include some of the tree trunk and the upper branches frame the building. I think you would end up with a stronger photo.
I see what you are saying and I am grateful for advice.
I took the shot more for concetrating on the cannons but I coulkd have included those.

Then you made the typical beginners mistake of putting your main subject dead in the middle of your photo. Much in the same way that beginner or snap shooters always put the heads of people dead in the centre of a photograph. Often with about 45% of the image of nothing above the heads and then having cut off the lower portion of the subjects legs.
It is fine to concentrate on a particular subject matter in a photo but then have a look in the whole frame and ask yourslef if it is best placed where it is or if there is another way to compose the shot, making it more interesting, before pressing the shutter.
In your shot, even if you cut off a lot of the drive and added more of the uper section of the building and trees and sky, you would still have your favoured cannons all in the shot as you wanted. However, the photo would quite possibly now look more balanced and appealing with less driveway and more building.
