I took a series of pictures here in 1982, not being sure which angle would turn out to be the best. Only when I scanned those slides recently, did I realize that this particular view showed what I hadn't noticed when I was taking the pictures - a small bridge just before the tunnel. I often talk about the limits of PP, and this is an excellent example. I could tweak the framing of this picture, level it slightly, tweak the colors, but there was no way I could "fix" the picture I took from closer to the tracks (with an angle too sharp to make the bridge obvious)
I took the train to Chicago from San Francisco tow weeks ago. Best rail trip east.

And the railroads know that. When Amtrak was created, the Rio Grande chose not to join. They would rather continue to lose money on their own passenger service than have Amtrak's trains get in the way of their profitable freight service. Amtrak got access to these tracks only after Amtrak member Union Pacific bought the Rio Grande.
