From time to time a UHH member has taken a poll to find out the preferences of UHH members when it comes to photography related stuff. I'd be interested in finding out about tripod heads. What type of tripod head do you predominantly use and why? A ball head? 3-way pan/tilt head? gimbal head? video head? I'm interested in what type of tripod head is used the most and why.

I have used a ball head up to now though I have a geared head arriving tomorrow and I can't wait to use it. I was so impressed with the accuracy of the geared head when I tried it - not fast but very precise.

3-way pan/tilt head tried other types and don't like em and go back to 3-way pan/tilt head.

My small travel pod has a small ball head on it.
My bigger pod I bought used about 40 years ago so it's an old fashiond alloy pod with pan/tilt. Since my biggest lens is a 600 prime, can't see why I would ever need more! ;-)

Ball head because it is light weight and will do about everything. I have a gamble but unless I'm going to be pretty much stationary it doesn't get much use.

3-way geared head for precision adjustments.

Pan and tilt for me - reason is that setting one leaves only the other to get spot on, whereas I believe with a ball everything has to be re-adjusted together?

A good old fashioned pan/tilt. Can't see any reason for anything else, at least with the cameras I put on it.

I usually use the tilt/pan that came with my Vantage Tracker. Sometimes I use a Vantage ball head.

Gimbal and Ball head depends on what I am photographing and with what lens
