I have three Yongnuo YN565EX flashes for my D610 and am about to order two more. Yup. Flashes and learning how to use them have become an addiction! I am not very good at using them yet, still learning about umbrellas, diffusers, snoots, proper exposure and back lighting, and I am getting a black foamy thing soon, too.
I was just wondering how many of you have a hoard of flashes? I originally bought the Yongnuo flash and have been buying to same brand and model because I kind of know how mine works and I like to keep it simple. But I can see myself moving on to studio lights or LED's maybe in the future, too.

Though I have several, my number 1 flash unit accepts bulbs of at least 4 different base sizes - THAT's versatility!!

Flashes are nice but I am not addicted. Have a few old flashes from the film era that I am still using. And for the first time in this century I bought a flash this month, that was a cheap Viltrox for my Sony A7r. I never use more than 3 flashes at the same time and with very cheap optical and radio triggers I have been able to use my old flashes with results that I am perfectly happy with. But also wanted to have a flash that I can put directly on the Sony and my old ones can damage the camera so I had to buy a new one for that.

But I have triggers, softboxes and umbrellas to use with my flashes and think that is more important than to buy more or newer flashes. That is my opinion.

Having a hoard of flashes can be an addiction or it can be an important part of your kit.

Learning to use flash means starting with one and working it before adding more. If you start with a ton of lighting, you will never know what the effect of any particular flash contributes to your photos.

When I set up for interior architecture photos, I start with one softbox and may add more speedlite and/or mono lights with modifiers as needed. Sometimes additional lighting may be in the form of small LED lights, mirrors or reflectors. I have a large lighting kit consisting of Canon 580 exII's, 550's, Nikons and off brand manual flashes, Alien Bees, Smith Victors, etc. but have never used all at one time. Interestingly, I have used the most for exterior architectural shots.

Maybe you should consider shooting subjects like the stealth bomber ala Joe McNally.

I never leave home without at least one. There are very few pictures I can't make better with some added light modeling. Slow down your buying frenzy till you get a little more experience. That's my little bit of advice. Not an easy thing to do when you are in frenzy mode. I know I have the flashes to prove it. Since you are shooting a D610 are you shooting using the Nikon creative lighting system and does the Yongnuo work with (NCLS) commander mode on your camera? Sounds like you are becoming a strobist not a flasher. Have fun :)

I really like my Yongnuo speed lights too. What I really like is the wireless triggers, that can fire multiple flashes at once and no cords to deal with. Look at the Yongnuo wireless flash triggers......feed the addiction ;) :D

While on the same subject I want to use a Vivitar 263 flash {which would burn my Canon Rebel innards} as a fill in flash or as main flash via wireless transmission. I have a Metz 36 which is compatible to my Canon. Would a transmitter on the hot shoe & a receiver on the Vivitar work? Not wanting to spend untill I get some good Hog advice

Canon Rebel, the original one was notorious for burning out the shutter circuit with the high voltages of older aftermarket flashes. My best advice is to get that flash off camera and trigger it with a wireless remote trigger.

I would borrow a flash meter in High School from the photography teacher when I took the Yearbook pictures of the bands, orchestra and choirs on the stage. I had three flashes with shoe slaves and I would ask the members in the pictures if all three flashed and they would yell 'YES' every time. I see they still make a Luna Pro, but it's all digital now. Not sure if it is still a good meter, but that is a whole new thread :) I am shooting in manual with a shutter speed of 200 and adjusting my aperture and flash output until I get it right with bracketing. Not the best method in the world, for sure.

I remember having to make sure the flash cube was in an unused position on my mom and dad's camera. What flash do you use?

I like to buy used or refurb with the lenses and bodies and have been lucky so far. After reading about the power of the old flashes hurting the electronics of the new bodies, I decided that new flashes were the safest way to go for me. The model I have have worked well so far without having to buy triggers and I like the little bases they come with so I can set one on a table or shelf for instant fill without having to carry a stand.

I do have GAS! I am on the Strobist web site, they have given me lots of projects to experiment with. So much to learn.... And yes, the new lighting system using my Yongnuo's compatible set up has been the right choice for me so far. :-D
