Hello Hoggers...
Planning a vacation for December and am looking at going mirrorless which involves a new purchase. I want to get it well before I leave so I learn the camera before I leave. After some extensive research I've decided on the Sony A6000 ( unless someone convinces me otherwise). I currently have an SX 50 which I love but want to go with something smaller, lighter, more compact, etc. The price of the Sony seems reasonable as new and I haven't looked into refurbished yet. My question is if I am to get one lens, what would you recommend? Trip is to Budapest and either Berlin or Venice.

I am familiar with the Sony A6000 but what I use is an Olympus EP-5 not implying that is what you have to buy for your trip.
I have found that the kit lens I use, made by Panasonic, has been very valuable for my traveling although I have other lenses. I am suggesting that perhaps you should start with the kit lens and build from there.

The A6000 is a VERY good camera for a HECKOVA price that produces OUTSTANDING images.

It is extremely flexible and the overwhelming majority of UHH owners give it rave reviews. In fact, with one exception, I have yet to see an unsatisfied customer...

I'm one of the them!! Ditched all my Nikon gear and use the a6000 exclusively. The 16-50 Sony lens has been absolutely stunning. You won't be disappointed - mirrorless is the way to go!!

I agree. The kit lens is great. The 60mm Sigma art series lens is sweet as well if you like primes.

Has anyone tried the A6000 for birding?

As is said so often in replies, it depends on the type of photos you plan to shoot. That being written, however, I travel a lot and I use a NEX-7 for most of it leaving the DSLR at home. I shoot a broad range of photos when I travel and for years (including those years when I took the SLR/DSLR) I have taken an 18-200. There is some distortion at both extremes, but I seldom miss a shot and I get everything from people on the street to gargoyles on a cathedral roof.

There are two available from Sony, and one is notably better and more expensive than the other. You want the OSS lens, which sells for around $850.

I would purchase the 16-70 f4 Zeiss lens. Great camera and great combination. The Zeiss lens would give you a good range of 24-105

Thanks to everyone who responded. Appreciate that no one tried to talk me out of the A6000-yet! Love this forum.

The A6000 is a great camera. Check out Gary Fong's YouTube video on it

I bought the A6000 to "dip my toes in the mirrorless waters" and my experience with it was so overwhelmingly positive that I ditched all my Canon gear and bought into the Sony system. I bought the Sony 16-70mm lens, which is absolutely stellar. It gives you a bit more reach than the kit 16-50mm lens and the image quality is exceptional.

If you intend to output prints larger than 12" x 18" you'll absolutely benefit from the better image quality of the 16-70. If you're only posting to the web and/or making small prints, you won't see much benefit aside from the increased reach.

I've no hesitation whatsoever in recommending the A6000 and 16-70mm lens. Have fun with it!

Spend the extra money, ditch the 16-50 and go for the 16-70 Zeiss. I am a mirror less convert. Have the A6000, the a7ii and just bought a second a7ij for my primes. Zeiss primes are exceptional

I just placed an order for the Sony a6000 on Friday with Cameta Camera and am waiting for my new baby. I got 2 lenses, the 16-50 and the zoom 55-250. This is my first venture into the mirrorless gear. I will be traveling in late fall and have come to the realization that I just can't carry the weight of my Canon 60D and the lenses. I will probably be using Auto more then anything else since I don't have a lot of time for learning all the nuances of the camera before my first trip. BTW Cameta was great in helping me to create my own kit rather then purchase one that has stuff I don't need. I worked with Ed and he has the patience of an angel answering all my questions and addressing my concerns.
