Updating - Administrator

This isn't a photography question, but it is a computer question, and we use computers for photography.

I am using TurboTax, as I do every year. It wants to update, but it says it can't because I must be a computer administrator. I am the only one using this machine, and I am listed as administrator.

I skipped the update and finished my son's federal return, but I cannot continue to the state return because I am not an administrator.

As a last resort, I'll install TT on another computer and see if that works.

Go to your Windows "User" account page and check the little box by your account type to designate that user as an "Administrator" rather than "Standard".

I already am Administrator. That's what's so frustrating. I'm the only user on this computer, and I'm the Admin. It would be nice if Windows had a way to disable the extra security for a home computer.

Are you using windows 7 or Vista? right click on the program icon and a window should pop up, select "run as administrator".

Something to try...if you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can turn User Account Controls off. Go to the control Panel, User Accounts, find User Account Control settings, and either lower the setting or turn it off. Just be sure you read the info that goes along with it...you are weakening your security by doing this. Hope this helps!

Joys? Joys? Not with Windows. What I get a kick out of is the new Windows updates they introduce. Every single time there has been a new version, it is reported as being "very good - stable." The older version, well, "We all knew that had its problems." If they knew about its problems, why did they promote it as the ultimate OS?

I think they got it from the Canon Book of Marketing. ;)

I always wondered about products that are touted as "New & Improved" . . . is the company admitting the old product was flawed?

Welcome to the world of Mr. Softy. Bill Gates and Microsoft didn't get wealthy writing perfect software but software that just barely got the job done within the time frame allotted to a specified release date. They always had the concept that they could release patches to fix mistakes after the customer buys the program. And another problem with Microsoft OS systems is there are thousands of hackers out there trying to hack into the code and install worms and viruses and Trojans and this requires constant updates to the OS to elliminate these avenues or access to your machine's data. Making money, more than quality has always been the bywords for Microsoft. I guess it's just like toilets, Harrington and Crapper got wealthy for inventing the hardware, but the real billion dollar business was in the software (toilet paper). LOL.
How many times have you been doing something important on your computer only to get that message from Microsoft saying "Updates are available" "Hit any key to continue".
I keep hitting "ESCAPE" but I'm still here.

This works for me all the time. For whatever reason W7 simply does not communicate withe install program as far as rights. I use winfordb's suggestion and it always resolves the issue.

Jerry, You went pro several months ago...with all the money your making you should hire a CPA or good tax Lawyer. Spend your time taking photos of those skinny New York babes and raking in the dough "leave your taxes to other pros".
