Nifty Device or Novelty?

The gift shop at a museum in my home town has just added a couple of "camera" related things. One is the drink mug that looks like a lens. Has been mentioned here before. What is new to me, however, is a "SmartPhone" tripod. When opened for use, it is about 4 or 5 inches tall. It is extremely light weight and appears to be made so cheap that I think it is nothing more than a novelty. Price, if I remember correctly, was around $8.95. Anyone seen this thing? If so, opinions?

I would think that, unless the SmartPhone has remote shutter release capabilities or a 2-second delay, any tripod is useless. You have to put your finger on the button (as with my older iPod) or on the icon on the screen to take a photo, causing movement. I think that handholding the SmartPhone will give "steadier" pictures than setting it on a tripod.
Just my 2 pennies worth (and that ain't very much, as we don't deal with pennies any longer).

And my 2 pennies worth:

A tripod actually makes a lot of sense when recording video with the SmartPhone. Unless a shakey video clip is what you are after, which is what hand-held will surely give you. Or to record a video of yourself doing something.

Probably a little over priced
381114161546

is the listing number for a little cell phone adapter on ebay about $1.50
(delivery around 3 weeks).
http://www.amazon.com/iStabilizer-Mount-Smartphone-Tripod/dp/B0056C4VRK/ref=pd_sim_107_4?ie=UTF8&refRID=1CJ1HKNR6XMPK3EK7P5Q

is the identical device for $17 and it's quite well made and spring loaded
takes a standard 1/4 tripod screw.

Actually the day before it arrived in the post, I made a monopod, from a busted tripod with legs that are around 5 ft 6 long. All it needed was a ball head mount from one of these stubby tabletop tripods an inch long screw and a small plate (i used a utility knife blade with a hole in it and trimmed it with pliers, hey it works).

It's pretty sturdy and i feel confident using it with a DSLR, not as pretty as the manfrotto monopod for 79 euro which was thinner and too short. But do you want to look at the monopod or the photo's :)

Anyway the cell phone adapter fits and yes the cell phone has a self timer and facial recognition too.

you can get a selfie stick which is shorter and made like out of a thick telescopic ariel. This I saw in a pharmacy for 10 euro and uses an identical cell phone holder attachment. The bottom end of that has a 1/4 threaded hole as well. It extends to about 3 feet from less than 8 inches and could maybe be used for flash, or audio.

Anyway 8.95 for the stubby tripod probably worth it just for the ball head and desktop video. It probably has telescoping legs too but too light weight and flexible for anything weighing more than a couple of ounces.

Did you know you can use a monopod for a video stabilizer, just need to add a little weight to the bottom.
