Another Bail-Out for Chrysler?

Faced with a $105 million fine, the recall of hundreds of thousands of cars, and the buy back of half a million pickups, will Fiat Chrysler need another taxpayer bailout, after the $1.29 billion we already gave them? Maybe Holland will bail them out, since the Fiat Chrysler (FCA) is a Netherlands-registered company.

Chrysler almost went under in 1963. They couldn't do nothing right back then either. Ford bailed them out back then when Ford engineers went over to Chrysler and redesigned their brake system.

That is the time I am talking about, for years after that episode you could interchange brake shoes from ford to a Chrysler product and back. I had to work on those pre 63 Chryslers and that is where I developed a real hatred for the product that is still with me to this day.

Sometimes saving a company that can't survive on its own isn't a good idea.

I don't think a bailout is in the works as Fiat/Chrysler has they money to cover this. The real problem is can the company survive. The last time I purchased a new vehicle (one year ago) I didn't even consider a Chrysler/Dodge/Fiat as they are pieces of crap. Look at the number of recalls http://www.safercar.gov/rs/chrysler/ involved in the buy back program. Too many good vehicles out there to choose from without wasting your money on garbage.

FWIW - A good friend bought the new Ram 1500 with the Fiat diesel engine. Every bell and whistle... Quad cab, all leather...the truck even has air suspension, and lowers itself when you park - to make it a little easier to get in and out. I love it. It gets a solid 28 mpg on the road. You woo not know it is a diesel when it is running - it is so quiet. It is the nicest pick up out there - without question. ( I am a Ford or Chevy guy BTW ).

But - it would make me too nervous to spend $70,000 on a vehicle built buy Chrysler, and powered by Fiat.

I do tease him about the faint smell of red wine and olive oil when he starts it up....

Do you mean like a GMC that can't or won't fix the Beam Shake in their trucks?

I gave up on General Motors vehicles. I had a HHR and the entire dashboard died twice. about once a year it would go haywire with all the gauges pegged out and fix itself in a day or two. Chevy never could figure it out. Then it had the whole recall/ignition issue and the gave me a Nissan Versa Note to drive for two months while they replaced the ignition.

I will confess I am a bit jaded....

When Chevy/GMC rolled out their Isuzu built diesels couple to the Allison trannies - the price went thru the roof. I was shopping for a new truck, and had been driving Chevy's for a long time - so when I saw the numbers...It forced me to compare with Ford.
The price was about $7500 LESS for the same features, trim level etc. As close parody as could be made.
As it turned out - I bought the LAST 7.3 liter F-250 Crew Cab truck Ford made. They then started making the 6.0 liter "hand-grenade" edition  ...You know - the one that the pin would rattle out at an indeterminate time, and the engine would blow up?
Needless to say, I have kept my truck in pristine condition, and it has only 130,000 miles ( It is an 2003 ), and overtime I take it for service, the dealership and the mechanics try to buy it :D

I guess everything depends on how you look at it.

Chrysler paid back their bail out in record breaking timely fashion. Most of their borrowed money came from a teacher's retirement fund, being a member of that , I kept a close eye on it. Most people are not really up on what happened, they just like to state what makes them feel better.
