Love them or Hate them...Harley's V-Rod

I work with a lot of younger guys, many of whom ride bikes. Mostly V-twins. I grabbed a shot of one of Harley Davidson's V-rods with the Porsche-designed, liquid-cooled motor. I showed it to a few of the guys and it was like I dropped a bomb in the middle of the shop. Aparently their is a big controversy over Harley introducing a liquid cooled model.... Who knew? I'm pretty much out of the loop. last time I rode a bike was on a 441 BSA Victor some 40 odd years ago! :)

2001 Harley introduced the liquid cooled v rod, I bought a tee shirt which on the back said Greedy bastards Harley Davidson motorcycle company. But I have rode most everything
in the early 1960's brands that never survived I loved them all. That said,My favorite bike HD Dresser, But I also got fed up with a sportster, blowing by all us big twin guys. These guys raliled on them saying not a hog that is a pig, not careing what people think I am my own man. So I tell you if you want to get on down the road, waveing at the big air cooled twins, the v rod sounds great, and is plenty quick.PS I forgot the full message on tee shirt which included born 1903 died 2001. Cool shirt, but not true.

I have an old biker friend who rides a Knucklehead.
He has a 'T' shirt that says,

"If Harley Davidson Built an Airplane, Would You Fly in It?"

I personally don't like the bike, because I am not a "Crotch Rocket" type and this is closer to that than the Dressers I am fond of...

But, the V-Rod is pretty much accepted now, like lots of things, the "Purists" have to carp about anything new and different from the OLD...but they come around. IT is not a GREATLY popular bike, but isn't spat upon so much anymore...

You have to understand that there is a List of Rules to be obeyed before you are welcomed into the Harley Bike Clique....

1) NEVER under any circumstance wear a helmet

2) NEVER under any circumstance wave at a Jap bike

3) NEVER under any circumstance wear anything but official Clothes.. IT matters not that a hanky costs $45.00 THAT is the Rule

4) ALWAYS wear fingerless Gloves

5) ALWAYS have a wallet that sticks out of the rear pocket by at least 4" and have it chained to your belt with a 36" Chain that also carries at least 25 keys and two Adjustable Wrenches...

6) NO MATTER how bad you need help if broken down on side of road...NEVER accept any from someone riding a rice burner....

Now there are MANY more rules, but that is enough to give you an idea of what the problems are with Keeping up the Harley Mystique >

Looks like they are offering an option of a liquid cooled head on some of their bikes for 2015.... Nothing is constant but change!

Guess you have no choice but to 'roll with the punches' in some instances. Their are some corollaries tho.... seems like I recall a bit of an outcry when Harley went to belt drive.....

As a life long mechanic with over 40 years under my belt I've come to appreciate the aesthetics of certain designs like the Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic or a Ford Flathead V-8. that list includes Knucklehead V-twins. Indian in-line 4's are pretty cool too..... Dosen't mean I'm a Luddite though. New tech. is almost invariably better tech. I'm a bus mechanic who has transitioned from slobberbone Detroit Diesel 2-stroke 8-V-71's to clean Diesel to LNG to CNG to our newest Western Flyer XE-40 Electric. Still wouldn't mind a 'day job' in Jay Leno's garage!

:D :D I play w/ local blues bands on the weekends and a lot of gigs are at a couple of 'Biker Bars'. The vast majority of these guys (& gals) are pretty cool. Seems like these days almost all the big V-twins are an acceptable form of transport. However there is one 'Private' club that I won't play at that is strictly a Harley venue only... The guys who hang out their are seriously scary....

Truth is True riders don't haul their Harley's to Stergus, or Daytona they ride them. Rain shine Hot cold. Don't matter, most Harley riders stop at ever water hole, I cant deal with that.Ilike crotch rockets but to many cops around now, and I cant control my throttle hand, it just turns.

Just wait till Harley releases the 'ELECTRIC' Harley. What are they gonna do then? It's not far away.
