Macro Question

I believe the min. focus distance for my 105mm is .34??mm, this NEF photo is .33mm (exiftool). Does the large crop affect the macro standing.
Before somebody comments on her weird looking head, I believe she is looking straight up at the lens. REJ.

REJ, from the location of the wings, I'd think it's looking straight down.
Nice pic though.

The Minimum Working Distance (lens front element to subject) of a 105-mm macro lens is 157-mm (6.2-inches), regardless of camera format, and regardless of the lens manufacturer.

I'm trying to learn how to measure here for close-ups and macro, so my comment here his is not academic. Just one example, this metric affects when I manually switch a macro lens on or off Full. I've been making it work, but really it has been hit or miss -- not my style, really.

So, you say as above but Nikon, without contradicting, I think, says AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED [CRC], July 2015, the minimum focus distance is 1.0' (0.314m).
I believe the Nikon value is wrt the sensor and is called Closest Focusing Distance, but you are citing wrt the front element, presumably not the outer glass or lens frame or sensor.
Maybe lens elements move in a CRC lens? Maybe some lens is or is not internal focus?

Focusing Distance is measured from sensor to subject.
Working Distance is measured from lens front element to subject.
MWD is more important to macro-photographers than MFD, because of illumination logistics.

Your original post states "I believe the min. focus distance for my 105mm is .34??mm, this NEF photo is .33mm".
1/3-mm is damn short! 1/3-meter is closer to correct.
As you work more with macro, you will begin to think in terms of Working Distance rather than focusing distance.

Unless the lens isn't actually "105mm" when focused closely (which is common among back-focusing lens designs) right?
My Sigma 150 macro lens is nowhere near 150mm when at MWD.

The MWD of a 150-mm macro lens is 225-mm = 8.9-inches.

The easiest way to confirm MWD is to physically measure WD during this procedure:
