Engraved Metal Photography

I tried my hand at photographing engraved metals and had a great time with it (I almost exclusively do nature and landscape photography). I used a Canon 7D, 28 -135mm kit lens and a tripod. Besides increasing my DOF, what are some pointers/suggestions you could give a newby? CC appreciated.

Very pretty gun, I think I would include some close-up's of the engraving for more detail, I really like the set-up of the second image! That's one pretty knife as well, did you do the work on the knife and gun?

Lighting. Use huge softboxes or umbrellas and mix in point sources if you want specular highlights. Work with angles to control the effects.

You might want to try a big soft box or a tent. It depends on what kind of highlights, or the lack of them, you want. DOF can be done by stacking different depths of field if the subject cannot be properly rendered by your lense's DOF. I think the pictures you have presented are very good for a first try.

Good pictures Birdwatcher, but hard to critique without getting closer to the pictures. You should have checked the
(store original) box so we could have a closer look.

Excellent pictures, I can't find much wrong with them.
