Bought a refurbished lens from Nikon (35mm) and the quality
of photos were no better than the 18-105 kit lens that came with
the camera. Called Nikon to return it and they said if I opened the
box I owned the lens. Only could return if the lens was defective
and I would need a return authorization number.
I told them it was false advertising to tell people it took such great photos
or the lens was defective.
I called their bluff and sent it back anyway!
Told them I was finished with Nikon and I would buy from
others in the future like Fuji, Sony, Olympus, and Canon.
(They all make as good or if not better cameras as Nikon!)
Two weeks later got full refund.
My motto: Never take a no from someone who can
never give you a yes on anything!

Bad pictures???
Yeah, must be the lens, not the photographer.
What an unhappy camper you are .....I say join the Canon crowd, you'd feel right at home there I would think ! :XD:
Not bad photos.
Just the same quality photos as the kit lens, 18-105
The 35mm was the 1.8

the 18-105 is nowhere near the quality of the 35/1.8.
Perhaps you should refrain from buying lenses until you acquire some more experience with the one you have.
I think I have plenty of experience!
Like I posted, perhaps the lens was defective.
Took the same photo with both lenses.
My main reason for the post was how I was treated by Nikon.
If it was Amazon I would have had free return and a refund
posted in 5 days.
I'm curious, which camera did you use and did you compare f/stop to f/stop. Shutter speed for shutter speed and were you checking raw files or jpgs? How about you load (store original) the two photos here so we can look at them.

It's pretty surprising that Nikon singled you out for poor treatment. I have never had any problem with them.

Ah-ha.
A chronic complainer who thinks that it's the equipment that makes a good photograph.

OP bought the lens and admits nothing is wrong with it.
Nikon doesn't owe him anything.
Crappy post from a brownish UHH user.
If one do not understand what a prime lens does and why one will always be complaining.
That knowledge comes from experience, something the op seems to lack.

Actually I am unhappy only when I camp! I am too old to camp and prefer B&Bs by a long shot to anything else, including staying with family or friends.
As to be ornery? Yup.
Unhappy in general? Nope.
I am exactly where I am supposed to be.
