It looks like it could be the cover image for a book about a desperate fugitive and a mountain bothy. Photographically speaking, the story that the figure tells is a bit vague - it looks dramatic but we're left wondering about the details. Perhaps you wanted that level of mystery.......

Wonderful recession of depth emphasized by the sharply delineated doorframe. From the sharp bottom step the full effect of atmospheric perspective is reached up at the top step ...not all that far from the top of the doorframe...but well into the hazy fog where the misty person of mystery stands in a pose of uncertainty...

Exposure and DOF nailed.

Definitely an engaging image!

Thank you RG and Dave, I debated leaving him in or taking him out. This is an HDR, but I chose not to rid it of ghosts. two of the images had figures in them. I removed a second manually. I thought it gave the eye somewhere to land once it traversed the stairs. The fog was so heavy there is no hint of anything beyond the top of the stairs. I guess I could get rid of him and call it the stairway to nowhere.

I'd offer you remove him then look at it again.
- If what I see holds true you will end up with 'just another image' where the addition of the ghost adds a level of mystery that leads you to look again.

It's a wonderful image and I thank you for sharing! S-

Thank you Steve. Several of the exposures do not have him in it and they do seem lacking. When I was taking the series I was disappointed that he showed up, but now I think I like him. He came on down the stairs or I would have just waited until he was gone and reshot.

I used to wait and wait and wait for people to move out of frame, but then I read something that explained how people add a tie, a sense of dimension if you will, to an image and make us feel a part of it. The same holds true for something like an empty subway station I guess. While the subway station may be beautiful on it's own we never really feel at home unless someone else is there with us, and not in the creepy way. LAF

Thank you again for sharing and for your insight into another world! S-

I am gradually learning to go with the flow and embrace what you are presented with. Sandra was excited on the morning this was taken because we had a heavy fog. I was disappointed because I love the vistas and you could only see a few foot in front of your face. But Sandra was right to embrace the fog. I got some of the best shots of the whole trip that morning.

Now I know I've seen Sasquatch. Seriously, the person's inclusion literally "makes" the photo. It sure doesn't look like South Dakota, tho. I think you should probably loan it to me for my series on Ireland.

This is beautiful CM.
Nice mystery provided by the mist/fog.
Great far subject to draw the eye.
Magic framed leading line taking you there.
It might be stronger with a little less foreground in front of the door, and more pleasing to the eye if the non-parallel bottom edge was squared up.

Thank you Greg,

The Black hills are a little bit of heaven in SD, but you seriously have to get off the road and take a hike to fully appreciate the beauty. I need to go back yet again.
Ireland is on my list.

Thank you LH.
I can take care of the foreground, and see what I can do about the bottom edge.

I agree. Without the figure it's "just another nice photo". The figure helps define the fog.
