Problem with an update to Canon DPP software.

I had a pop up notice to update my Canon software for a month. I finally decided to click on it and go ahead with the update. BIG MISTAKE. The Image Browser grabbed all the pictures from DPP and sometimes takes three times to open and then occasionally freezes and requires a forced close. I used to be able to click on a picture and have it open in DPP for Raw processing but this doesn't always work either. My plan is not to use this software but to have my files load to a different program when I transfer from my camera. My question is what program to load to. I run an IMAC 27" and no way do I want them to load to "Photos". I have Lightroom and Photoshop but that is not the place for the files to live. Can anyone give me an idea of what they use?

What version ended up being installed? Interesting, I've used DPP for 9 years and have never been prompted to upgrade once. I visit the Canon site every so often and have downloaded updates periodically. What camera are you using as maybe a different version is available for that camera model? Do you use Image Browser or DPP and possibly Image Browser is the problem?

I have the 7dmkii. IB 1.5.2 is what it says now.The version of DPP is 3.14.40 (3.14.40.0) When it works, it's great, however I have to admit that I've had problems with it from the first day. Now it's just worse. My IMac is going in for a hard drive recall replacement so when it comes back I'll try a reinstall. My fear in that is that I will lose my pictures already there.

I'd suggest using the v4x software for your 7DII and RAW processing. It might have been on the CD with the camera or can be downloaded from usa.canon.com (you'll be prompted for the camera serial number to enable the download). This software is specific for RAW Canon processing for their current models since about mid 2014. Certainly, make a full back up of all pictures (and everything) on the hard drive before letting the equipment out of your physical control. Backed up to something external from the machine ...

I launched the image browser which I found I had installed but never used. It prompted to perform an upgrade. Having not used, I'm unsure of the purpose of this tool in Canon's portfolio of software. I've configured my windows system to launch the EOS utility when my camera is detected via the USB cable. I tend to use Windows Explorer to copy the files from the camera to a folder created on the harddrive. The EOS utility can perform this action as well using a interface that provides a preview of the image.

I launch DPP then and use the quick view option for the initial round of culling and setting left / right rotations as I do not rotate in camera. It seems my workflow is different than yours and maybe less automated?

I never saw the v4x software referred to when I installed. HMMM I am using an IMAC and will certainly look into this. My pictures have been loading from a card reader directly into Image Browser. I think this is where my main problem is. While my machine is out I'll dig out the original disks. I have done a complete system back up to an external hard drive using time machine. I think I"ll be ok with that (insert fingers crossed here). I also have older pictures backed up to an additional hard drive.

I saw your other note about the harddrive replacement, the back-up and the expectation a clone will be made and exactly the same when returned to you. You should be fine. The v4x software is both the same and different. I like how it processes RAW images, better than the two other Adobe products you have. I also like how you can download lens profiles for nearly all Canon EF / EFS lenses and apply during processing (as well as store in the camera for JPEGs). This feature I find both easier and more powerful than the corresponding tools from Adobe.

Thanks for your input. It has been REALLY helpful. While it's out for repair I'll read up on software both on the Canon site and through search. I'll like to be ready to fix these issues when it comes back. It's taking up too much of my time dealing with it now. It's just not right and my main issue is lack of knowledge. Thanks again.

You might check the Canon Learning Center to see what they have for DPP training as well as utube. I started that way but that was a long time ago. There is a DPP v4 guide to purchase from Arthur Morris. He's the most pro Canon shooter I've met (virtually). Even more so than SharpShooter. If you're interested, see this link: https://store.birdsasart.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=396

Even if you just go with the free stuff for training, consider subscribing to the (free) Birds as Art newsletter and you'll be amazed most everyday at what he can produce in shooting mostly 'birds as art'.

Ditto. I've never been prompted to update either.

From that page:

"Both authors firmly believe that the manufacturer's conversion algorithms will always out-perform 2nd party software when it comes to preserving image quality, fine detail, and accurate color rendition."

That has been my experience, as well.
