I am presently shooting with a D300s and D700. I just returned from Iceland and most of the time had the Nik 24-70 f/2.8 on the FX body and a Nik 80-200 f/2.8 of the DX body. Great coverage of both expansive landscapes and close detail. The main reason for using 2 bodies (both are 12mp) is to maintain resolution. I would like to upgrade and perhaps use just one body but I have not found anything that I really like. I want a 1/8000 stutter, 5+fps, at least 24mp. I would like to balance cost and features and think about a used D3x. I shoot only NEF and process in LR6 and PSE13. Glass is all FX Nikkor AF-D and AF-S and f/2.8 or faster with one exception. Zooms and primes from 16mm FE to 300mm prime (AI-s f/4.5). Questions and comments appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Don't forget to take a close look at the D 750 ( it just doesn't get much better than that)!
My son bought a D750. He loves the results that he is getting. I shoot with the D810 and have the D800 for backup. Both are excellent cameras. I upgraded from a D700 and never regretted my choice.

Try the D810. That did it for me, I have my D700 as my back up. Happy shooting. Did you go into the Ice Caves? That's on my Bucket list

Thanks, I did not get to the Ice Caves. It was more of a sight-seeing trip than a dedicated photo excursion. We only had a week and we were happy to see more and shoot where possible. My concern with the D8xx bodies is the HUGE file sizes and slower burst rate. How do you find the D700 vs D810 in use? Did you consider the D3x?
Thanks.
I upgraded from my DX 5-year old D90 to a D750 about 6 months ago and absolutely love it. The low light capability alone was worth the upgrade. At 24 mp (I usually shoot RAW) the files were surprisingly large. The D810 gets rave reviews, but I suspect the file size would really surprise you. Given the gear you use, you are an educated consumer. Pick either one and you will be pleased.
I sold my D700 and D7000 and went with the D3. Now looking for a second body and have been looking hard at the D610. The D750 is also in mind. Good luck, but unless you want to use the video feature, I would go with the D3 is you are leaning that way.
On my D810 I shoot raw small. When I need the larger files I shoot large. My computer is 5 years old Mac and I use Lightroom 5 for my Raw files. That works for me. Not the fastest camera but I enjoy it. And I just bought the sony A6000 to play with. Good luck
The D810 with MB-D12 grip will give you 5fps in FX. In DX crop mode (1.5), 7fps.

My D800 does not have sizes for RAW files. Can you clarify?
I was in Iceland in May for a photo workshop and brought my D810, D610 and the holy trinity. Am 66 and my hands are bad. Am now switching to Sony mirror less. Just purchased the A6000 and a7ii. Look at them. Great cameras
Rent each of these suggested for a short time, try them on the same, or similar subjects, to determine which works and feels best for you. In this manner, you'll have the best decision for your photography.

I did take a look at Sony. Are you using your Nikkor glass? If so how you rate the AF using an adapter? Also, my AF-D lens will be MF on a Sony body. Some have said to wait for Nikon to respond with a solution like their own version of the A7mk2. That would be cool!
I had the D3s and loved it but the D3 series are very big, heavy and bulky. I now have the D750 and love it, even more than my old D3s which I didn't think would be possible. It's low light capabilities easily rival the D3s and I am getting 24MP.
