Two weeks ago I purchased a new Canon 7D Markii and a new 70-200 f 2.8 IS ii.
The 200mm end is extremely soft and won't micro focus. It's like getting a new Corvette and sending it to the shop for two weeks and having to drive a rental. UPS just picked them up and I am all ready having withdrawals.

With the newer Canon bodies you can do micro adjustments on your lenses and store the serial numbers on your camera. That away you can individualize each lens.

One of my customers had the same issue with that lens on his 7D2. A two week trip to Canon for a firmware upgrade fixed it.

I can sympathize with you, but this is the time to read the owner's manual through...every single word...and go to the bookstore and order a book on that camera to read!!!

I never had that problem with my lens, the previous iteration of that 70-200 mm f/2.8. The minimum focus distance is 3.9 feet; it's not what most people would consider a macro lens, but there are some zoom lenses with macro capabilities. Any closer than 3.9 feet and you won't be able to get a proper focus, even in manual mode, with that 70-200 mm f/2.8 lens.

I notice Nikon seems to use Micro and Macro interchangably. What most photographers call a "Macro Lens" for taking extreme closeups of small objects Nikon puts the "Micro" label on.

Nikons "Micro" designation means that the lens gives you TRUE 1:1 Macro images with only the lens, no attachments needed.
Many lenses called "Macro" are nowhere near true Macro in that some only give as little as 1:8 life size on the sensor, these are not true Macro lenses and are merely close-up lenses the manufacturers are passing off with the "macro" name tag.

Neither of which have anything to do with the OP's issue of the lens not accepting "Micro Fine Tune" settings in his camera.

Can't the owner do that firmware update him/her self without sending it back?

Not on the lens. Only Sigma lenses offer owners that capability at home. All other lens manufacturers make you send the lens back for firmware upgrades.

My body was current on the firmware. After reading a bunch of stuff on some blogs. I think both my lens and body have some issues. The one thing I know is when I get them back Canon has always been a one time fix. At least I caught this early before school starts. I normally shoot around 4 or 5 football games a week and cheerleading starts on the third.
