Rain Gear for Equipment

I usually carry a Ziploc bag with me when I go out shooting. I just noticed that there is another possible FREE source for equipment rain gear. The sheets and pillowcases that I recently bought came in a fairly thick plastic bag with a zipper. No, you can't shoot in the rain with it. I merely am suggesting a simple/free way to protect your equipment if you get caught in a downpour. It doesn't fold as easily as the Ziploc but I have a feeling I will put this new found bag to good use ... either outside or inside for storage.

Of course there are products like the one you mention. My suggestion was not to take the place of those items. I merely am pointing out a free source of equipment protection from inclement weather when all you want to do is keep the equipment dry.

For some people it is more about how much they spend than the usability of the item.

Optech Rainsleeves have been the choice of pros and amateurs alike for decades. They come two to a package and are easily folded back up and re-used for years. They come in three sizes and all are under $10 per pack. Cheap enough for even the tightwads!

OK!!! Let's STOP now.
I SIMPLY SUGGESTED A SOURCE OF A PLASTIC BAG TO PUT EQUIPMENT INTO IN CASE OF RAIN. YOU WANT TO BUY SOMETHING? ... BUY SOMETHING! I SEE NO REASON FOR THE COMMENTS I'M STARTING TO SEE. NOTHING IN MY SUGGESTION HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH MONEY. YES, I MENTIONED THE WORD FREE BUT NOT IN THE CONTEXT OF SAVING $10 BUT MERELY TO POINT OUT THERE ARE ITEMS WE MIGHT NOT THINK OF THAT WILL SERVE A NEED. LEAVE IT AT THAT.

Thanks, Howard, for your suggestion. I,too, almost always have a folded up zip lock bag or two in my camera bags. Never know when something comes up can be solved, or partially solved, by pulling out one of the bags.

Some time ago I purchased the Optech rain sleeves in two pack bags for less than $10.00 So I also carry one of those in my camera bags.

A take off from the "No good deed shall go unpunished." Would be, "no good suggestion shall go unpunished." Dont take it personal nor expend energy explaining.. me, I have been there too many times.. fighting off the "it won't work" people. Thank you for the suggestion Howard.

So!! before any one beats me to it, I will point out that extended drought is "inclement weather" Thus, you have no need to protect your equipment to keep it dry. Oh, dust, yep.. so you are right... dry with dust is "inclement."

Any practical suggestion is a starting point for building on, a foundation.

No need in shouting, the suggestions allows you to shot as well as protect your gear. I carry them in my bag. I do not think you can find a free bag to protect your gear and allow you to continue your shoot. Gary

Let's see if we can get this up to ten pages, with suggestions for protecting shoes from rain, stories about leaking roofs, dogs that don't like to go outside in the rain, etc. :D

Thanks for the tip. I have quite a few zipper bags like that, and I use them for storage. I'm surprised they haven't switched to cheap, thin, disposable plastic.

Actually Gary, I used to place my (film) camera into a plastic bag / the lens facing the bottom / screw on a second filter holder to the front of the lens (from outside of the bag, thereby holding the bag securely to the front of the lens) / cut out the piece of the plastic bag in front of the lens / VOILA ... a free bag allowing you to continue shooting. If I suggested doing that today I am sure I would get many responses asking why I didn't just buy something. The answer is, I was younger AND it was fun to make something that worked reasonably well.
See, the ideas I put forth are not to save money, although that's not a bad idea. I know there are items on the market to allow shooting in harsh weather - I was not addressing that issue. It was meant to suggest a possible step up from a Ziplock bag (which I still carry)..... That's all ... nothing more.

I carry a plastic trash bag with me in my camera bag. It's large enough to fit over the camera bag.

Grab the FREE shower cap from your hotel/motel and keep a couple in your bag. Small and works great for camera and normal lens and the elastic keeps it on the camera nicely.
