Depending on the distance to the feeder, this might be one of those times when a flash, possibly with a Better Beemer, would have come in handy. Fill flash would remove some of the shadows from the bird's throat.

I agree with flash, but on continuous shooting it don't work well.

They make a Safari, a Fresnel lens that fits on your hot shoe and extends the on board flash. Good for 100 mm and over. I think that B&H has them on special not. Really good buy.
