Canon Support

I have used Canon equipment for the passed 10 years and never had to call Canon for a repair. Maybe I'm just lucky. So I never really had any experience with their support center.

Today I had a reason to call them. I called the number listed on their website and to my surprise a real person answered the phone, no recording or dial a number to get redirected. I told the person my problem and she said she would transfer me to the proper department. When she said that I figured I'd be on the hold for an hour. So I put my phone on speaker to do other things.

No sooner I did that and a gentleman got on the phone. We discussed my problem and he know exactly what to do for me to get a resolution. It was refreshing to have the kind of support we had years ago before everything was outsourced to 3rd world countries.

High fives to Canon USA!

Here's the background on my issue if you're interested in reading it:
I had an opportunity to purchase a 5DMiii on Ebay at a lower price than authorized dealers sell it for. Well, as you know, I'm weary of doing that because of the grey market and warranty concerns.

I read recently that Canon could verify the serial number of the body to see if it's a ligit camera. The seller gave me the number and when I asked Canon if they could verify it they said they did not have that information. They advised that it was not necessarily bad to buy Canon from a non-authorized dealer, or reseller because chances are there would not be a problem. Well, as we all know you can always get a lemon and may have to get it fixed or replaced. Without a valid warranty, Canon would not be able to help me.

You need a valid warranty AND a valid receipt showing the authorized dealers name for the body in order to be covered by Canon. So he said it's a gamble to go that way. You, as the buyer, have to decide if it's worth the risk to save a few hundred $ to buy from a reseller. I mean for all I know it could be stolen equipment. So I think I'll save a few more $ and buy from an authorized dealer.

I don't know. Canon could not provide that information. I suppose I could have asked who could get me that info, but after he explained it I decided I was not going to go that way.

By the same token it does say it's new and comes with a 1 year warranty. I need to find out more about the warranty. It still would have ebays return policy protection.

My coincidence I had reason to call Canon UK today, had to press button 1 for photography queries then straight through to a very helpful lady who did not have an immediate answer to my problem but got the information within a couple of minutes, I too was impressed.

This is not really a third world country issue, it is a management issue.

I have been using Earthlink for a decade or so. Their primary support is based in India. It is my gold standard for customer support. Prompt, efficient, knowledgeable, and coordinates effortlessly with AT&T to resolve any issues, which have mostly been local AT&T issues within miles of my house. Plus excellent follow up. They call me to see if the problem has been resolved satisfactorily.

As a Canon user, I'm glad they are also delivering. I've never needed to call them...

It is very easy to find a problem and to blame to first point of contact. Airline employees are often subject to customer frustration and abuse when they have no control over the situation and are frequently ignored by senior management.

Thanks for acknowledging a good service organization.

George, I'm surprised it's the first time you've called Canon!
I've called them hundreds of times, that's why they are there.
George, if you DO get a stolen camera, just make sure its a USA model!!! :lol.

Yeah, well I never really had a need to contact them. The only issue I ever had was a pop up flash that did not pop up on my 7D (This was a known problem). I found videos on how to fix it and that worked for me. Other than that, I've had a number of Canon bodies and lenses with no issues.

Check with your local dealers to see if they take trade-ins.
I got a 5D mk iii for almost half the new price and still had 7 mos left on the original warranty which is transferrable.

And as far as Canon support goes, every company should have the same great service.
My camera came with a counterfeit battery that was so well done that no one could tell it was a fake. I knew there was something wrong when it would not charge on my charger.
Canon took it in exchange with a real one at no cost to me.

As I understand it from Canon, you must have the original receipt AND warranty card to get the warranty. They said they do not accept warranty if product was resold. Have you ever tried to have it repaired by Canon?

My dealer was the original seller so he was able to transfer it. But, no I haven't needed service on this one.

Interesting...Are they an Authorized Canon dealer? Anyhow, I checked my local shop (who is an authorized dealer) and they don't have any used Mark IIIs Lots of Mark IIs and 6Ds. I'm thinking of trying to find a good used one on Ebay. I can get a new one from B&H for $2,500, but I'm trying to save some $.

George, the warranty cards are a pretty useless formality. Probably like most of those cards, they are more for gathering info on who buys and where the merchandise goes.
The real piece of gold here is the original sales receipt and being that buyer. Warranties are NOT transferable.
Either way, they are only good for one year. One year comes fast!
Even though chit happens, in reality, very few cameras/lenses ever have a problem. Knock on wood twice of course!!
I don't know if any of the other companies have off-shore tech lines, but Canon is VERY proud that ALL of their US support is in Virginia or SoCal. And I'm glad as well!!! :-)
