I have heard this a few times and I would love to get the truth from knowing hedgehoggers..
People seem to think that, for example, if you have a 6 mpx
camera and you purchase a 12 mpx camera, you have a camera that has twice the quality. Are you with me??
The truth seems to be in order to have a camera with twice the image quality you would have to have one with four times the mega pixels. It is all about the size of the sensor and other factors I am told...OK!! what is the truth guys?

Mexapixels are not image quality. They are simply image size.

If by quality, you mean resolution, you are correct, for a camera to have double the resolution of a 6mp camera, it needs to have a 24mp sensor.

But, you also need a lens with sufficient resolution and sufficient stabilization/shutter speed at a diffraction conducive aperture to take advantage of the pixels !

Image Quality comes from a combination of components, glass, sensor, processing, post processing, etc. Everything in concert contributes to the overall IQ.

Ok..I agree, but what makes image quality...Is it the lens, size of the sensor, what?

Quality of the lens, sensor's ability to accurately capture the light, etc

24 is quadruple 6. You're thinking double the width and double the height.

One quick question...do you mean sensor size?...I am still trying to figure this out..Since you have it all figured out..could you write down your exact thoughts..Many people are confused...

All those things give the capability for good IQ. But without great technique, they are wasted. Proper exposure, control of camera or subject motion, white balance, are all essential.

One more megapixel will give you more detail!! Slice that any way you want.
I thought that was pretty simple.
There are all kinds of crazy ideas about IQ or even what it is.
You want better pictures, take better pictures. Learn to optimize your cameras output and minimize its shortcomings.
You want to talk theory, I'm sure there is no shortage of people to chime in!!

No, a sensor can contain any number of megapixels, so sensor size doesn't have anything to do with megapixel count. It does relate to inage quality somewhat though, since larger sensors can contain larger photosites that result in cleaner images.

Pixel counts are over rated.
They are primarily used by salesmen to impress people who know little about photography and by people who know little about photography to impress other people who know little about photography.
The top of the line Nikon D4 has a 16MP sensor.
