I normally shoot nature pictures and love my Nikon 55-300mm on my D5200. However, I just returned from a European trip and found I primarily used my 18-70mm lens as we were on walking tours. It gave new meaning to "walk-around-lens" for me. Accordingly, I'm now interested in upgrading to an 18-140mm for more versitility. I would appreciate any comments on this lens as a replacement for my 18-70mm. Thanks.
Take a look at DxOMark's lens ratings. The 18-70mm lens tests a little better than the other two (18 vs. 14-15). I have the 18-140mm one for general use. There are times when I would like more reach. I've found it a softer than a prime and the aperture can be limiting in low light...but I haven't found something better at a price I can justify. I also have a Sigma 70-300mm and seldom use it unless distance is involved- can't use it on close up subjects.

I had the 18-140mm lens that came with the camera. I purchased the Tamron 16-300mm and traded the 18-140mm for another lens. The Tamron is a great all-purpose lens. Not the best, but serves its purpose.
My photography consists of a long walk with my camera every day. The 18-140 is the only lens I use on my D7100. I would highly recommend it as a general purpose walk-around lens.

If I could only keep one of my Nikon lenses it would be my Nikon 18-300mm. This lens would be followed by my Nikon 18-200mm and then my Nikon 18-140mm. Just my opinion. I hope you enjoy whatever lenses you purchase.
I got the 18-140mm as an all purpose lens to use in place of the two kit lenses which came with my D7100. I think it's a great value. It rarely comes off the camera, very sharp and a good range of focal lengths. I researched Nikon's all-in-one DX zoom lenses, and the 18-140mm seemed to be the sharpest in that class. And a bargin lens too. Adorama has factory refurb for $240. You should probably just get it and see how you like it.
Note that the 18-140mm has VR which I don't think the 18-70mm has.

I have two kit lenses (at least they came with my D5100), an 18-55mm and a 55-300mm. Depending on what I was shooting, I would use one or the other. However, I discovered, for a walking around lens, neither of them met my requirements. Many times the 18-55 was too short, and other times the 55-300 was too long.
So I purchased an 18-140 mm and I love it. It is almost always on my camera. Yes, I do have the 55-300mm for wildlife, and other long distance opportunities. BUT, if I went to Disneyland with grandkids, I would probably only carry the 18-140.
Now, having said that, there is a number of people on the hog that would prefer the 18-200mm or the 18-300mm for a walking around lens. I can't really comment on that but they also offer some potential advantages.

18-140 is an exceptional lens, rivaling some primes in overall sharpness and resolution.

I had and still have an 18-105 VR, and 70-300 VR. Both decent but we were going to Kauai an included a private "doors off" charter helicopter flight for my wife and I.
I bought and absolutely love my 18-200 VR ll. At the time it was a hundred less than the 18-300 VR at around $850, now it is $550. It is on my D7000 90% of the time.

As an alternative, I keep my Nikon 18-200mm on my D7000 all the time for use as my walk around lens, for that body. Love that lens!
Love my 18-140 that came with my D7100. That said, when birding I always have my 55-300 on. But for general candid photography with the family or the candids I do at schools for my job I can't beat the 18-140.
Thanks for all the helpful insight.
Bet it's gonna be great. Just ordered it yesterday from B&H. It's replacing my 18-105. Come to think, that is the first time I have ever sold any of my photo gear. Normally the few time's I have got rid of stuff, I give it to kid, nephew's or niece's.

Ditto. This lens was purchased with the camera and is my primary lens unless I know I will need more reach ahead of time.
