Question about DNG

I have a bunch of photos in Lightroom that were imported as dng. I have a bunch more that were imported as I intended raw/Nef. I am not sure how I imported the group as dng or if it was possibly from another program such as Nikon Capture NX2 (which I know is set to import as NEF or something else.. I do have the check box in LR set to import dng or some such under file hadling but all of my newer stuff has imported as NEF... I'm curious because I have about 2 months of dng pics and can't explain it. lol.

Occasionally, I'll import camera card files to DNG as a means of just getting the raw files opened and in a form that I can work with. It's really easy to just let the DNG open them and then work with them and save them in any form you wish.

yes but I don't think I can save them back as raw /nef for consistancy...

When you export from LR it has "original" as one of the format choices to export in, so your Nikon Raw is still there. I do it all the time as one of the sub apps of Paint Shop Pro is a false HDR from a single photo that only works with RAW. So I drop the menu, click on original and export. I then import my Canon Raw into PSP use the HDR app and go on from there.

DNG is still a RAW format, but it has the "sidecar" adjustments file attached to it. Before DNGs you'd see your NEF file (for Nikon) and then another sidecar file with Lightroom adjustments. DNG just allows them to be combined so they are easier to manage. Your RAW file is still there unharmed.

DNG is Adobe's form of RAW, it takes less memory than the NEF file, and stores the meta data without an additional sidecar file. So You have either selected DNG, or DNG + NEF as your file choice from time to time. Why not just select DNG and not bother saving the NEF files too?

I am happy to know that, however, while I use Lightroom and Photoshop alot, I sometimes revert back to Nikon Capture NX2 or Nikon Capture NDX and use the NEF file format for work in there. Mainly, I like to keep my options open and storage is not an issue (yet). Having said that, as I mentioned, I had inadvertantly imported 500 to 1000 images as DNG and it was worrying me... In addition, some were my wife's and she was panicing over it... lol she doesn't mind shooting jpg accidently because almost any editor will open it, but she was afraid she had lost several hundred photos because they weren't showing up in View NX.

I'm with you. I prefer to keep my NEF files, too.
