Good for you to keep focused under pressure. Not too many folks get to see those huge animals up close and personal. Thanks for sharing. Looks like you were on a pretty small boat to get that low angle. Tell us more.

We were on a Princess cruise in September, 2009 and took a whale watching side trip out of Juneau. The weather was cloudy and very overcast. At the time, I was using a Canon t2i with my Canon 70-200 and a 2x extender. The weather cleared up enough to see this guy/gal coming straight at us and I was lucky enough to get this shot. I have several other whale photos on my flickr page from this and other Alaska trips.

Very Nice shot, all I ever got in Alaska was their tail as they went beneath the surface.

BamaTexan,

Very nice and sharp. I'm certain I couldn't have held the camera steady with that much lens.

The first thing I thought of was Captain Nemo's submarine in the Jules Vern novel! Unfortunately with senioritis kicking in this evening, I can't remember the name of the novel or the sub. (:<(

Thank you very much JCam, I am blessed at my age to be able to do so. I believe Nemo's sub was the Nautilus in 20,000 leagues under the sea. And, yes, it does resemble it....... :D

When we took an Alaska cruise a few years back, we saw very few whales from the cruise ship and those few were at least 1/2 mile away.

I use about 1/250 on land, but over the last couple of years I've found that on the boat, I need 1/500 min up to 135mm, but with my Tamron 70-300 and crop sensor camera I go to at least 1/1200 and on a sloppy day push it to 1/2000 or higher. On-the-water you only get one chance for the shot, and I'd rather have it underexposed and fix it than have it messed up with camera movement.
