Selfie Photo Booth for a Wedding

BTW ... Dave ... I talked my son and his fiance' into hiring a really good wedding photographer. They were going to go cheap on it and I showed them all the mistakes I made on my niece's wedding. I think that helped them realize how valuable a good wedding photographer is. The mistakes are things most people don't notice until you point them out, but I think what I showed them made them more picky about choosing a photographer. I am very pleased with the people they went with. :-)

I'd buy an old Polaroid, hire the girl from your camera club, and let her take the photos. The guests can then take their "selfies" with them.

He wants me to set up my Rebel at his reception so their guests can do selfies with it. I am worried about the exposure. The event will be New Year's Eve, so there will be no natural light. I do have a video light, but it runs on batteries and it may not be enough light. I have a flash, but i think that could be complicated. I would monitor it, but my son wants me to be part of the festivities, and I really should be social. I thought about hiring a young girl from my photography club, but then it might take the spontaneousness away from the people taking selfies. They might get sillier if no one is watching and I think that is what my son and his fiance' are hoping for.

Has anyone ever heard of this? Any ideas that won't cost a fortune in lighting?

Okay ... you can rent selfie stations, but they don't give prices up front so it must be expensive.

I would rather give the $400-$800 dollars to my son and his new bride and try to do what they asked.

I never looked into the cost. I have been to two events in Phoenix which have had "selfie" booths, and it was a big hit with the guests. I'm sure your son and DIL will love it if you can pull it off.

But it makes terrible shadows! I am going to try what Dave said anyway. I do have an umbrella, so I'll get that flash off to the side and do some test shots before I leave it. Loved the X on the floor idea. I wonder if I should put my 50mm on or my 15-55 kit? I have eneloop batteries and can bring all of them and keep them on a charging station. I only have two batteries for that camera, but they last a long time because that camera does not have live view. Besides, I can charge one while the other is in the camera. The brides parents are coming for dinner tomorrow to meet us, so I can talk to her and her mother about making a background. This will be fun! I'm excited now. :-)

If you get the umbrella very far to the side you will get nose shadows since you will be using just one light. For this type of pictures flat lighting is great. That's what you get in photo booths. Have you x spot far enough away from the background so you don't get shadows. - Dave

If you do it yourself, don't forget the REAL popular thing about those types of set-ups are all the costuming that go with them. The hats, wigs, mustaches, glasses etc. That's what makes them FUN!!!

Thanks again, Dave ... and I'll suggest that to my future daughter-in-law, SS. She's the kind of person that would love that kind of thing.

A wedding will offer precious moments never to happen again. You may wish to consider that value when deciding costs.

Few if any involved will recall the cost involved, but all who see the photographs will experience enjoyment, and for years and decades to come.

It's a Rebel XTI .. I probably couldn't get a $100 bucks for it. I'll tape my tripod to the floor and hope for the best. :-) My son is getting married! I'm not going to get all cheap over it.

That's why I talked them into an absolutely fabulous wedding photographer who will be there for the ceremony too. The photo booth is for fun, to allow their friends and family to do silly things on their wedding day .. things that will be wonderful memories for years to come.

There's a Creative Live DIY course that shows you how to make a photo booth using foamcore. It's pretty cool. Their courses are on sale right now I think. That course shows how to make quite a few nifty photography items. Don't forget to gather some great props, too.

I think Dave is the only one who briefly mentioned "make prints". For me that an [e]essential[/i] for a photo booth. That will require a full time attendant and printer(s), computer, tethering or wi-fi, etc. Canon Selphy dye sub 4X6 printers are under a hundred bucks and prints are about 27 cents for a 4X6.

A lot of hassle and a booth rental with attendant and props can be had for a few hundred.

Well, OddJobber, this is a selfie booth. The idea is for the guest to take selfies for the couple getting married. It's not really for the guests as I understand it. But I'm old ... just found out tonight that my future daughter in-law has attended several weddings with these selfie booths. She knows exactly what she wants, I just have to set it up so it works. :-) The internet idea was a good one though. We are now planning to have a monitor hooked up to the camera .. I can probably get my boys to dig up enough spare parts for a computer as well. We are a highly computerized family.

Use the flash and hire the girl from the photo club. Not everyone will know how to use a dslr for selfies so someone is needed to help. A girl who is helping with this will not spoil anything, just make the event better. Remember to have a memory card and batteries in the camera ;)

A photobooth will come in any where from 300-900. They are always manned or womaned. They are there for technical issues and to babysit the equiptment. Even if there wasn't beer there it is a situation for issues. I have done parties, I have done green screen booths. Billions of things can go wrong. You may be called over all night long to fix whatever is wrong. Your only consolation is your not producing prints on the spot. So it will not be till ne next day or late that night you will realize most of the pictures are bad. You may need to tether a laptop or tablet to the camera to show the pictures. Otherwise when people do their shot they are going to put their hands on your camera to try to see what they just took. Think about it.
