i want to adjust the rgb and individual colors in an adjustment later
in only a certain part of the picture.
1. i open the picture
2. do i click on background to make another layer?
3. i click on the the adjustment layer icon (looks like a crown/histogram)
and i "lasso" the part of the picture that i want to make changes to ..
it still adjusts the whole picture...cannot figure out why.
do i lasso first and then hit adjustment layer? that doesnt seem to work either. i try on the layer mask and i try on the section write next to it in the layers palette(looks like a crown/histogram) nothing seems to work..
if someone can step by step for me i would much appreciate it.. thank you

If you:

1.) Open your image, and
2.) Make a selection within the image (background layer) using any of the available selection tools, you can then
3.) Create (while the selection is active) an adjustment layer.

And, the adjustment layer's layer mask will include only the area you previously selected.

This method is not set in stone. There is almost always multiple methods of performing a task in photoshop.

it seems to work with the lasso tool but not with the quick selection tool-does that make sense?

i think i got it. for some reason the second brush with the plus sign was highlighted on top of page instead of the first selection-of just the brush!

is there anyway to keep the selection (ants) showing while making the adjustment. it turns off as soon as i click on adjustment layer.

It doesn't turn off, it simply becomes the layer mask for the adjustment layer. If you would like to see it again or make more edits to it, you can hold down the ALT key and click on the mask in the layers panel.

Open the image
Make an adjustment layer like Hue/Saturation
Click on the layer mask
CTRL I to invert the layer
Set saturation to max so you can see the area you affect
Use a white brush to highlight the area you want to change
Use the black one to erase that as needed
Adjust the levels to get the effect you want
