Captured this Tufted Titmouse image while visiting Fort Clinch State Park, near Fernandina Beach, Florida, USA. I could never capture an image when it was completely in the clear, so I thought I would edit it and see what public opinion would be on the options.

Nikon D300, Nikkor 300 MM f/2.8 with a Nikon TC-14E II Teleconverter , 1/250 Sec at f/4.0, ISO 400, Spot Metering, No flash.

Which do you like the best and/or should I have edited it more?

I really like the edited version, seems to bring out the highlights through out the bird. Great job!

The difference between the edited version and the original is the removal of some leaves and branches which causes changes in the background. Nothing has been done that would cause a change in the bird itself.

I'm the odd-duck... and preferred the original.
I LIKED the bit of leaves behind it... natural setting without detracting from the bird, imo.

Nice bit of editing there. I might also like to comment on your composition. This is one of those cases where the rule of thirds doesn't apply. It doesn't apply because of the strong diagonal presence of the branch. To move the bird anywhere else in that frame would detract from an already excellent composition. Well done.

I like the edited version. I think the bit of leaves draws the eye to the tail of the bird. And Bob I just learned something about strong diagonals and centering your picture. I knew strong diagonals were good, but I would have tried to off center the bird and ruined the composition. Thanks to both of you.

In this case you can test what I'm saying by cropping or moving the bird & branch around in the frame. You'll quickly see it only gets worse if you move it.

I believe that in leaving the bird a place to go, up and right in this image is important. If you crop to closely you loose that space and some of the natural look.

Removing that branch did wonders for the shot

I like the second on best as the area around the eyes has been opened up a bit. Nice job.

Isn't that a nice park? I didn't have time (and it was too hot) to go wandering but I did enjoy the fort.

Yes, it is a great park and it is starting to cool off a little so you can get around on the beach side without burning up.

Looks good.. The edit is well worth the effort..

And, the rule of thirds is firmly in place in this photo..

The birds eye, the focal point in bird imagery, is precisely at one of the rule-of-thirds "power points"..
