Looking at the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Nikon F. Does anyone have/used it? Considering using it on my new D750 for all around work and macro. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I have always bought Nikon lenses; but the Sigma Art lenses have recently got my attention, especially the 50mm and 24mm.

While I don't have that particular lens, I do have two of the Art Series lenses, 18-35 1.8 DX, and the 24-105 f4 FX. They are both built like tanks and will stand toe to toe with almost anything. And that is just my opinion, based on user experience. I have heard nothing but good things about that lens.

Last week I ordered the Sigma ART series 24mm f/1.4 HMS for my Canon 6D. (Don't have it yet -- it's taking its time crawling here). Every review I read about the ART series was very positive, and had very high ratings.

Its a good lens but with a reproduction ratio of 1:5.6 its not a macro lens.

My Sigma 50mm 1.4 is a dream.... although I am still getting used to cropping with my feet. It also takes a decision to use it--I recommend taking ONLY the 50mm sometimes, to force a unique way of looking. Not to brag, but my family presented the Sigma to me at a surprise birthday party--first time I've been speechless in my life.

I bought the 24-105 last year and tested it extensively. I even posted test shots between the Sigma and my Canon 18-200 kit lens here. About half the viewers could see no difference and the other half thought the Sigma was only slightly sharper. Prints from the two lenses showed no differences. The Sigma was only better in the corners under high magnification. I returned the lens and have new-found respect for that cheap Canon kit lens.

Lesson learned: compare the new lens very carefully to your old one and be very critical of what you see, not what you imagine.

What specifically is an "ART" lens and what is it used for?

It is a good quality lens used on cameras to take pictures.

Boy, you cleared that up for me!!!
Why is it called an ART lens, there are hundreds of quality lenses that you attach to cameras to take photos.

Sigma recently decided to classify their lenses in one of three different categories: Contemporary, Art or Sports. About the "Art" lenses they say: "Designed with a focus on sophisticated optical performance and abundant expressive power, our Art line delivers high-level artistic expression."

The Art lenses can be thought of as their top of the line optical performers. Every review I have seen for an Art lens has called that paricular lens extremely sharp.

The 50mm f/1.4 Art lens mentioned in this thread has been likened to the $4000 Zeiss Otus lens in sharpness.
