Test of Canon SX50 vs Nikon P900 - full digital zoom

Part 2:
Here are a few of the differences in the 2 cameras:

Pros of Canon SX50:
Smaller and considerably lighter.
Shoots in RAW.
Quite a bit less expensive.
Super slow motion (capture a golf swing and find out why your game sucks)
Pretty good (not great) IS system.

Pros of Nikon P900:
Better image quality in my opinion.
Viewer sensor - automatically switches from live view when you want to use the viewer.
Time lapse and more choices in Scene mode.
Good IS system.

Both are great bridge cameras and I plan to keep both as backup to the 6D... of course unless something new comes out that I can blow $s on.
Hope this helps.
Larry

Not sure I understand the purpose here. Testing the SX50 against the 6D and P900 is not a fair test, you're comparing apples to oranges and banna's. If you're just showing the performance of each I guess that's Ok. all 3 are nice cameras that stand on their own merit.

Both the SX50 and P900 images look rather soft. Both should be able to do better. But just looking at the full sized image doesn't tell the whole story. When you enlarge the image, you can see how it preserves the detail. But be aware that the tiny sensors in bridge cameras don't do well in such a test. This is where the 6D will totally blow the bridge cameras out of the water.

The SX50 and P900 images are soft PRIMARILY because the OP was using FULL DIGITAL zoom!! Better test would be at full OPTICAL zoom

Hi Jim, did you see the earlier post with the optical zoom? I wish the Sun had helped me out this weekend but to be honest I got about what I expected under the circumstances. Of course, since the digital zoom is nothing more than a crop, things go south fast.
Thanks for the response,
Larry

Please go back and see the earlier post showing the same think at full optical. For some reason it didn't make the newsletter posts but it's out there.
Thanks,
Larry

Having just gone through the process of buying a camera and considering the Nikon P530, Nikon P600, Canon SX50 and the Canon SX 60 I would recommend a Canon and in particular the SX60. One feature that the Canon has that the Nikon doesn't is a flash hot shoe. For me the ability to attach an external flash to the camera is a very important feature. Not sure the Nikon P900 has that feature. If so, then it is basically a toss up.

I agree that a HotShoe is a MUST!!! Plus the SX50 & SX60 have the ability to shoot RAW if you so desire.

Hot shoe is surely nice to have but hardly a must. But the P900 does not have it. It has flash and that makes it possible to work around the lack of hot shoe with slave flash.

With MOST slave flash set=ups you lose TTL functionality.

You are right. Ability to shot raw is an important feature, at least for me.
