Changing photo locations in LR4

I know there has been talk and instruction regarding moving photos to external or different hard drives and that is part of my dilemma.

I was quickly reaching the end of the space on the current location where I have my photos stored. (I do have a backup location as well.) I wanted to move them to a much larger (5T) external hard drive and was moving them within LR until there was a crash in the middle of moving. I had trouble restarting LR due to too much on the hard drive and that is why I was moving them.

So, outside of LR, I moved the rest of the folders to the same one I had been using and optimized the folder. Now, though most of the pictures are there, there are some folders that have say 150 pics in them where the original had 250 pics. For those folders, I am renaming the 150 folder and them moving within LR the 250 folder then removing the 150 folder. This takes a lot of time since there are many folders and I am having to go down the list and compare the number of pics in each.

I also found that some folders don't appear to be recognized in LR at all. So, I went back to the original location and moved that folder, but LR said that there was already a folder by that name. If I go outside of LR and look, there the folder is, but in LR, it is not visible.

Advice????

I needed to do this early in the game-- switched for Aperture to a 6T external--and floundered all over the place--seemed like I lost everything--

gave up and called Adobe tech support-- free and the wait was not too bad--- the person helping assessed the problem, set me up on the external and proceeded to teach me how to do this-- and a whole lot more about catalogs, folders and so on-- The person spent about an hour with me-- works a charm now that I know what I am doing.

Suggestyou try this.......

Thanks. I'm sure that as I go through, I'll have other questions and therefore, I would be getting more out of a call than just using a recipe that would solve this problem alone.
