Don't know about Albuquerque, but drive over to Santa Fe and up to Taos - both within 250 mile radius.

Was in Albuquerque for a week for a conference a few years ago and found wonderful photo ops all over the area:
Old Town Albuquerque - old buildings, flowers, markets, churches, patios, street musicians.
Lucked into the balloon festival which is early October.
Petroglyph National Monument - outskirts of town
Sandia either by road or by tram
The Acoma pueblo, also known as Sky City, is beyond amazing, the oldest city in the country. Tours are possible but you must check the calendar as there are Feast Days in October when it's closed to visitors. Inexpensive photo pass necessary.
Turquoise Trail scenic byway
Jemez scenic byway to the ruins of the old mission and the Bandolier National Monument (state has a great website about their scenic byways)

I spent a summer working on the White Sands Range. I did not have a camera at that time, but there were a lot of things to photograph--White Sands, the road up to Cloudcroft, etc. It is (barely) within your 250 range.

The Albuquerque Zoo is a particularly photographer-friendly Zoo with a higher proportion of moated or hoo-hah enclosures as opposed to chain-link fenced enclosures. the images attached here are just a few of many made during one day with a Canon SX50.

If you visit the Petroglyph National Monument on the West side of Abquerque, ask at the Headquarters for directions to the "Piedreas Marcadas" Trail entance at the North end of the 17-mile long escarpment. An easily hiked level trail gives you close-up and personal views of thousands of prehistoric archaic native American petroglyphs. if you have any interest in pre-tribal Native American culture and art, this is a site not-to-be-missed!

If you're looking for autumn color and you'll be there in the early part of the month, drive north to Chama.
Along the way the scenery takes many different and photogenic forms. When you get to Chama look into the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic railroad. The C&TS is a historic (Listed in the historic places regs) steam railroad, 64 miles in length along some of the most breath taking mountain rails in the country.
Actually if this interests you you should check it out ahead of time. October is a very popular time there because of the color.

Touristy
-Albuquerque Old Town
-Santa FE Plaza
-Taos Plaza (and the Taos Gorge)
-The tiny old town of Cerillos
-Red River
-Sandia Crest (if you're a walker there is the crest trail with all sorts of spectacular views.
-Acoma Pueblo (last time I was there you needed to pay the inhabitants if you wanted to take photos)
-the Albuquerque zoo
-Chimayo

Not as touristy
-Tent Rock State Park
-White River catwalk (a long ride....not a day trip)
-State Rd4 between San Ysidro and Los Alamos (some spectacular views)
-Various areas in the Manzanos (the mountains south of Albuquerque..you go through Tejeras canyon via I40 then head south.
-Bosque Del Apache (October might be a little early though)
-Rio Grande Nature center (might be some sand hill cranes there by Late October)
-the Large radio telescope array in Magdalena
-El Malpais south of Grants (do NOT attempt the "chain of craters backcountry byway" at the south end of the El Malpais area...you may never return)
Endless desert possibilities in every direction.

Another good place for color would be the 4th of July trail in the Manzanos.

It's close to your driving limit.
Between Durango and Cortez is Mesa Verde.

Google Mesa Verde images, no photo can do the place justice.
Its very hands on, you can walk, climb through all of the ruins.

It will be a place you will never forget.

Durango is home to numerous biker rallies.

The drive to Telluride is nice but the train or drive to Silverton is very scenic. (Research the train https://www.google.com/search?q=durango+silverton+train&rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS576US576&es_sm=122&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=BzWZVZWHH4WMNpC0mdgM&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAw&biw=1600&bih=815)

Many good suggestions already. The Sante Fe Plaza is an area where you can get a great picture by pointing the camera just about any direction. Lots of southwest colors there. Ditto Albuquerque Old Town.

Here are a few examples from Santa Fe:

Here are a couple from last weekend in Alb Old Town:

Also, the International Balloon Fiesta will take place in early October. It is now sponsored by Canon and is a photographer's heaven!
