Canon Digital Photo Professionial 4.0

I currently process my RAW files using Adobe Camera Raw before moving into Photoshop, however I have been doing some reading about Canon's Digital Photo Professional 4.0 (DPP 4.0) having some inherent advantages over Adobe Camera Raw. Would anyone out there with experience with DPP 4.0 be willing to offer their opinion? Also, I am kind of a clutts at searching the internet and Canon's site is not very friendly for searching. If someone has a link to Canon's download for DPP 4.0, that would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance.

What camera are you using? DPP 4 only will only work with raw files from newer Canon dslrs and a few older ones. You need a serial number of one of these newer cameras to download it.

I've been using it for about a month now. but I have never used lightroom or any of the others so I'm not the guy to ask. But I have seen tutorials on Lightroom and it seems to me that LR is the way to go. The tutorial I saw on DPP4 left a LOT to be desired.

I concur. I use LR for 95% of my editing. I provided the link to DPP since you asked, but I'd give the $10/mo Lightroom/Photoshop creative cloud offering a try.

I use DPP almost exclusively for my downloading an processing in Raw. I do my initial adjusting and converting to jpeg or what ever format I choose. I have Elements 12 and Picasa that are used when needed. I do ninety percent in DPP.

Nalu, this is not going to be very technical.
I've been using DPP since 08, when I started with Canon.
I also own LR and CS6.
That said I use DPP almost exclusively. Is it as good as LR or PS, heck no. But I'm not trying to work miracles on my pics, just crop and enhance a bit and DPP does that just fine for me.
Your photographic goals might be way different than mine.
Fortunately, I don't have to try and turn a pic of my wife into a super-model as she already IS one!!
Good luck with all your PP goals!!

thanks for the extra tutorials. I have seen the second one/s on DPP4. Those are the ones that I thought were lacking. I'll see if I can glean anything from the others. thanks again.

I used to use DPP a lot more often... I'd use it primarily for high ISO stuff (1600 and up with older cameras, 3200 and up with more recent). It used to do better with noise reduction, than earlier versions of LR and PS I was using alongside DPP. Even then, I still used LR for organizing and image management, PS for final image optimization and retouching. They're both more full featured than DPP, within their areas of specialization: LR is a more powerful management/organizing tool... PS is a much more complete image editing/optimization s'ware.

However, I've more recently been using a Noiseware plug-in with Photoshop that I feel does a better job handling high ISO images... so I don't use DPP much anymore.

Yes, Canon and DPP have "abandoned" some of the older Canon models... I'm not exactly sure which ones. I know for certain that the latest DPP no longer supports Canon CRW files... the original Canon RAW file format used by 10D and earlier. It might also no longer support 12-bit CR2 (20D, 30D)... only 14-bit CR2 (40D and later). Not sure about this, but if they haven't done so already, sooner or later Canon will probably abandon the 12-bit CR2 files, too.

There's no such limitation that I'm aware of with the third party softwares. For example, CRW and 12-bit CR2 are still fully workable in Lightroom and Photoshop, I know for certain.
